Luca found himself in a sort of purgatory. He was between the past where his ailing mother was now suffering the loss of his father and his future which still lay ahead of him in the unknown. He'd been making his way to his room to get settled in when this sudden realization hit him. Hard! He stopped walking and simply stared ahead of himself, a bit dazed. His heart thudded in his chest and his jaw locked as his body tensed. People continued to pass around him, eying him questioningly, but he noticed no one.
There was no going back to what had been. He had no one back home on Earth to return to for his mother had lost touch with reality years ago, yet the road ahead was just as unwelcoming.
All of the adrenaline he had felt when he had been accepted into the Academy, and when he'd worked his first jobs for Starfleet was slowly diminishing. Those experiences had all led him to this moment. There was no denying that he was excited, but he was also frightened by the prospect of doing this all alone. He would be inhuman to say that he wasn't for it was natural, for most, to feel a bit of fear when embarking on a new adventure.
He had signed up for this though. He had known that what lay ahead would he hard, grueling work, yet that knowledge hadn't stopped him before. He had needed the distraction. The rush of the unknown had motivated him to keep going. Why should it stop him now? It wouldn't.
He seemed to come out of a sort of trance and he was aware of his surroundings once more. He gripped his bags and made one more step and then another, getting into a steady rhythm as he continued down the corridor. He took a deep, relaxing breath, raising his free hand to rub a growing headache around his temple. His other hand pulled along his luggage filled with the few meager things he managed to obtain during his three years off world. It wasn't much, mostly clothing, knick knacks from the planets he had visited in the past and a photograph of his little family on a beach on the Mediterranean when things had been simple, happy...complete.
He leaned his head from side to side, sighing as his neck cracked as some of the tension left his body. He made a silent promise with himself right then and there that he would not dwell on the unknown. Sure, he'd have his moments of weakness and insecurity, but he would never consider quitting. It wouldn't be an option. The USS Peregrin was filled with endless possibilities and he would entertain them all.
This was his chance to hold his head high and show just what he was capable of!
Up ahead he could hear the steps of someone approaching. He'd passed quite a few people on his stroll to his room, but he hadn't stopped to talk to anyone just yet. Perhaps he'd do that now. Moving his bags to his left hand and flipping his dark, flyaway curls from his eyes, he quickened his steps a bit, anticipating his first real encounter.
