Dorian woke from a sound sleep with almost a premonition. He lay there for a moment entwined with his wife. His hand slid down her body to her abdomen. Simple happiness suffused him for a moment as he lay there half awake.
Then the priority signal sounded in the other room. He reached behind him and pulled the covers back. Then kissed her temple before gently pulling his arm out from under her. He pulled on a tee and shorts on his way out to his desk.
"Coffee, cream only," he said as he paused at the replicator. Picking up the cup he checked the chrono, "4:35 am." He took a sip and sat at his desk. "Trust Starfleet to wake me up early."
He thumbed the terminal. "Identity Accepted Captain Alexander. One moment for transmission from Starfleet."
The face of Admiral Conklin appeared on screen. He didn't know why the Chief of Starfleet Science would want to contact him but he was all attention.
"Admiral," he nodded. "Captain," she acknowledged his greeting. "We have a situation that requires your assistance. The USS Copernicus, an Nova Class Science vessel has missed her last two scheduled reports. We would like you to investigate and recover her crew and the vessel if possible."
His brows drew together. He wondered why they would want Talon to go off mission so soon after arriving in Etimon's sphere of influence.
"Captain, the Copernicus was in orbit of the planet Aesco. They were studying the peoples of the planet. They reported some sort of storm before they went silent." She seemed concerned not only about her people but something else. "And Captain Alexander, this is a Prime Directive situation. This civilization must not be contaminated. I have appended a complete briefing package regarding the natives."
"Please report in regularly Captain," she smiled and cut the signal.
He rang for PO Keller and spent the next half hour going over the information packet. When Keller finally arrived he gave him the chip. "Copies for the department heads," he said. "Call a meeting in the briefing room in twenty minutes."
Then he pressed his communication panel. "Bridge this is Captain Alexander. Transmitting coordinates for a new heading. When ready head out at Warp 8. I will be up there shortly. Alexander out."
He he dismissed Keller and went back through the bedroom for a quick shower. Once in his uniform he went to the bed and smiled at his sleeping wife. By now she had to be used to his odd hours or at least he hoped so. She needed her rest. He smoothed her hair and dropped a kiss on her temple.
Then he left their quarters and made his way through the bridge to the briefing room. He chuckled when he got in the door. "Trust you to beat me here," he said to the room's single occupant.
