Jonathan couldn't remember the last time he had been in such a morbid atmosphere, everyone was twitching and and seemingly appearing extra polite. Someone had even offered to polish his badge, he had to restrain a grin at that one, he knew why they were doing this. They all wanted to get down to the party, he couldn't blame them. Jon was interested in checking out the party himself but he had volinteered that Lin could take up his time as well should she want to stay, as long as someone was up top and staring at the same blinking buttons.
With an elbow rested on the side of his chair and his chin sat on his fist, his eyes darted across the small screen of the PADD he was holding in his other hand. After a moment he shifted in his seat and and straightened his limb on the armrest.
It felt very odd sitting on a seat in such a layout, the chair was in the middle of the room, sure he could turn and all but he honestly felt there was too much room and that he was an easy target if someone waltzing in with a cloaking device decided to come up and stab him.
At least Boribeth had been handled and not safely secure on the Nike, though the sooner she left the sector, or the quadrant the better. There was still the matter of that Hirogen, Eteara had gotten rid of the security posted at his quarters after the first day, something Jon was not too comfortable with but there hadn't been any incidents, not yet anyway.
A pair of feet approached him, Jonathan knew who it was and kept his expression a concentrated one, the woman stopped in front of him, he could hear her taking a deep breath.
"Sir."
Jonathan ignored her but oddly enough after a second a small smile appeared on the girl's face as if she was expected to be ignored but in a teasing way.
"Sir,"
Jonathan looked up and smiled widely at her, "Yes Ensign?"
"I've finished my report, and uh there is only 5 minutes left until the end of my shift."
Jonathan could sense the sudden increase of awareness everyone had on listening in, intent on hearing his response. Leaning back in his chair, he looked at her for a long moment. He opened his mouth to say something but there was a beep from the woman's console. Jon raised an eyebrow at her knowingly, the ensign's cheeks flushed a little, she could have sworn that she hadn't forgotten anything. When she reached her console, she frowned and looked back to Jon.
"Transporter room 1 says that they've got a loss of a 0.2 buffer balance drop and request that the majority of further guests use room 2 and above."
Jonathan was soon at the woman's side, everyone was concentrating on what they were doing and not if woman got to go to a party a little early.
Ordinarilly a 0.2 change was nothing, it was a common misallignment that hardly affected the transporters but if it was to rise unknowingly, people might just arrive at the party with a lack of dress. "Request granted, but tell them to keep me posted, and engineering as well. Don't want any dates becomming one before the party has even started."
The ensign nodded, doing as requested and then looked back at Jon with hopeful eyes whom in response glanced over at the chronometer. "Alright." Jon said softly, the girl managed to contain her squeak of joy and did her best not to skip off the command centre. Jonathan glanced at the others around the room, he could feel their groans of annoyance, but none of them were as close to finishing their shift as the ensign had been.
"Now where's that shoe rub?" Jonathan asked aloud and someone actually started to get out of their seat, the commander sighed and chuckled. "I was joking Lieutenant," He gave the man an apoligetic glance, both for saying no and for the fact the poor soul had actually believed him.
As Jon sat back down in Lin's seat, he couldn't help but wonder if Lin would need a foot rub, hanging around all those dignitaries for ages.
