The Salorri woman's body arced through the air and a wailing sound came past her opened, bloodied lips. Another ran after her, settling down next to her side. "What happened?" Several of the Salorri men had rushed to the scene and were smiling happily. The woman wiped her mouth, scowling at them. "My command wasn't fast enough. She caught on too quickly." She stood and faced the men. "Wipe those smiles off of your faces." <<Subdue the alien.>> Turning to the brown-skinned woman, she grinned. "You have no idea what you have done." <<You will not resist.>> "Take her to the mine."
Later, stripped of her uniform and put into sturdy work clothes and boots, Kinin wiped away the sweat from her ridged brow so that she could see to hack away at the rocks deep below the earth. The air was stagnant and hot, the lighting dim. A very muscular amber-skinned male stood next to her and he gave her non-verbal instruction, having discovered quickly that neither spoke the same language. He was already looking at her with concern. This was not the place they usually sent the women. Together, they worked well and he soon learned that he had misjudged her strength. After a time, they were allowed to rest and she sat down on an overturned bucket. As he handed her some water, he gestured his question.
Smiling, she pantomimed slugging one of the Salorri and he laughed, his voice deep and booming. He grabbed her hand and looked at her knuckles, which showed slight bruising. Releasing it, he laughed again and nodded. Though they were given freedom of thought so they could react to dangerous situations, they had been commanded to not resist and to work hard. Breaks were few and far between, and very short. Having barely sat for five minutes, they were back up and working again. Kinin's tool slammed into the rock, sending shards flying, many of which ended up tangled in her hair. It was rough work, and dangerous. She had to dip her head several times to avoid shards flying into her eyes.
As she worked, she thought about the turn of events. On the Talon, she had heard that Dorian had granted them shore leave. She longed to join him on the planet, but upon arrival had seen him only from a distance. He seemed lost in thought, so when the Salorri lead her away, she followed. Only when she saw others from the Talon doing labor did she immediately take action, catching the Salorri off guard. What was making her respond? Telepathy? She narrowed her eyes at the thought. Cowards. Swinging the pickax violently, she broke off a huge chunk of the rock. Hopefully someone on the Talon would figure things out. She was sure Yaxley would not be very happy with her present physical activity.
