Vek scowled as he sat at his desk in his office. He'd been hearing rumors about a new Federation space station in the Gamma Quadrant ever since they had welcomed Etimon into their little "peacekeeping" organization. But he'd remained convinced that if they were building something that large that there would be some evidence, either Engineers coming through Deep Space 9 to head to the Gamma Quadrant. And sure, there were a few ships, but no more than what he usually saw. However, the convoy of ships towing along huge station components had confirmed the rumors, and all of the Ferengi aboard DS9 had been in a flurry of activity ever since. Vek was no exception.
Vek tossed a padd onto the desk, interrupting the silence of the room with a harsh clattering. For years now, he and his father had been making tremendous profits moving rare and expensive goods from the Gamma Quadrant to the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. He knew there would inevitably be a rush of people trying to get to this new station to build their own businesses. At least he had one small consolation, and that was the fact that his employees had managed to negotiate a successful trade agreement with the Etimonian Princess. He shook his head and the thought. A female?! Making trade agreements? Sure, there were some progressive members of Ferengi society who argued that females could make profit, and own businesses. But he wasn't the sort to believe any of those things. Fortunately, his wife Omala hadn't gotten such crazy ideas, even after having lived on Deep Space 9. Sure, she wore clothes when she left their quarters, but that was only because Security had protested her being nude in the promenade restaurants.
Something about not being sanitary or something.
Humans were really quite ridiculous sometimes. But they were one of the easiest species to convince to part with their strips of gold-pressed latinum, so Vek wasn't inclined to complain. He suspected the Etimonians would be similarly inclined to spend their currency, which was the biggest reason he'd decided to setup shop in the new station. He knew it was a risky endeavor, for there was no way he could be in both places at once, so he'd need to trust his employees not to try and swindle him. Which basically meant that he needed to find a good number of non-Ferengi workers. Hopefully the locals would be interested in finding work aboard the station.
It was going to be a lot of work, but there was tremendous opportunity for profit... and even more if he managed to ensure his competitors failed.
