Luca internally frowned at the man's response. He'd expected a definite yes or no or at least a 'how in the world am I supposed to know?' answer. Yet Charles delved in closer, posing a question of his own that took Luca aback for a moment. Clearly there was no getting a straight answer out of this man. In a way he liked that. He needed to tell someone how he felt, work through the problem but....
Luca looked around and watched as two officers entered the mess hall. He nodded his head at the first officer as the man passed. The second walked in the same general direction as the first before taking a seat close by. They were listening, if not now then later and he didn't want to share his problems for all of mess hall to hear.
Bringing his eyes back to Charles he smiled lightly and looked down at his half eaten tray. He didn't have much of an appetite anymore. He wanted to get out of here; go back to his room, curl up and sleep. He was no good for anything today. Flying the ship was surely out of the question so there was no need to go to the bridge. And his thoughts were a bit too scattered to talk to Taniya. He quickly glanced her way again. He'd just make a complete fool of himself or at least make more questions rather than answering any.
Luca raised his eyes to Charles holding the man's unwavering gaze. "Maybe I'll stop by your office. I'll enlighten you then," he said giving the man a wry smile. He had his doubts before, but now he knew without a doubt what Charles' job on the ship was. Maybe it was his calm aura or the way he insisted on looking him directly in the eyes when he spoke. Not many people did that these days. Especially not people who had something to hide.
At least he'd gotten the hard part out of the way. Charles may not know what his issue was, but at least now he knew something was bothering him. There was no need for the awkward introductions and the silly 'Tell me how that made you feel' questions. They could get right to it, but then again if Charles couldn't give a straight answer, why should he be surprised when the man asked more open ended questions? Question he didn't know if he would be able to answer, because there was a lot on his mind, not just his brief stint with death. No, there was much more he needed, no wanted, to talk about and if Charles could help him the least he could do was be open to it.
Luca looked at the two arrivals. They were senior officers. Had they not been he would have asked them to come join them for a chat. He tried to reason with himself that he wanted them at the table to add a bit more fire to the conversation, but he knew he really wanted their company so Charles couldn't ask more questions. Not that he was bothered by them because he wasn't, but because he didn't want everyone to hear his answers.
Oh well. Later perhaps. "I'll be going now. It was really nice speaking with you." He gave a knowing nod as he stood, his message clear. This wouldn't be their last meeting and they both knew it. Discarding his things, he left the mess hall.
End Luca
