Name: Liandra Barlow
Preferred Rank: Captain
Position: Diplomatic Liaison, based out of Starbase Gamma Etimon
Species: Human
Age: 46
Physical Description: Long brown curly hair and brown eyes. Lia likes active pursuits, so she has a fairly athletic figure.
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 115lbs
Birthplace: England, Earth.
Hobbies: Reading, mostly, though she loves to sing in the shower! Spends a lot of time doing outdoor pursuits on the holodeck, including sailing, hoverball and rock climbing. In her year of being shipwrecked, she learnt to shoot a bow and arrow, which she is now quite fond of, having brought the bow back with her.
Family on board? Greg Barlow, husband and Bethany Barlow, daughter
History/Background/Education: Liandra knew from an early age that she wanted to be in Starfleet, to explore the stars. Her greatest wish has always been to be a part of something big and exciting; she wants her name in the history books alongside the crews of the Enterprises, Voyager and the likes. Her family didn't like her aspirations to join Starfleet, and it was when she told that she was going no matter what they thought that they had their last conversation together; despite a couple of efforts on Lia's part, her parents haven't spoken to her since the day she left for San Francisco.
At the Academy she always worked hard, and was a first class student, her primary areas of study being diplomacy and politics.
Following graduation, Liandra worked on a variety of ships at the edge of the Alpha Quadrant, smoothing over potential conflicts in the demilitarised zone and effecting first contact situations. She was very well known within Starfleet for her excellent negotiation skills.
Her last long-term posting was on the USS Crudaigh, as first officer. During that mission she and three other officers were stranded on an alien planet for just over a year, until they were rescued by Starfleet and brought back to Federation space. After a brief period and settling back in on Earth, Lia was sent to take over command of the space station Deep Space Nine. She knows that it was most likely a probationary assignment of sorts.
Following the birth of their daughter, Bethany, Lia and her husband took some sabbatical time, from which Lia was recalled prematurely to take command of SGE following Captain Lin's sudden departure. When Captain Lin returned, Lia took up a more flexible role better suited to a new mother, that of Starfleet's diplomatic liaison for the Gamma Quadrant, based out of SGE.
Personality Profile: Even in the twenty-fourth century, being a woman in command still isn't taken well by a lot of planets' civilisations. So, Liandra comes across to those who don't know her as a rather forceful personality, definitely not someone to be messed with!
She is a strong person, but her friends (which she doesn't have many of) know that she has a softer side and a great empathy for others, which is part of why she chose to follow a career in politics and diplomacy; in the hope of avoiding conflicts and bloodshed between peoples.
Spending a year in what was essentially a career break has done a lot of good for her; as well as falling in love and finding her husband, she's learnt to be a warmer person, which will help her make friends more easily in the future. Her year away from Starfleet taught her a lot about what really matters to her in her life.

Up until about five minutes ago, it had all been quiet on the USS Makani.
Commander Liandra Jones was sitting in her quarters, enjoying the sounds of a lone flute playing through the comm system, staring out of the window at the globe of the planet below them. Such a peaceful looking place, she mused. It was a shame that she knew the reality to be anything but.
Turning her head to the right, she could see the edge of the Carausians negotiation vessel. Or, more accurately, one of their battle ships which had been sent to carry their ambassador through the dangerous space around their homeworld to the Makani for the diplomatic proceedings which she herself was supposed to be heading up.
Until five minutes ago, that is, when the Pylati had fired upon the Carausians. Liandra sighed. So much for diplomacy.
