As they sat at the table, the two laughed, and for the first time in a while, Virgil didn't feel like an outcast. He had to admit that many of the personnel aboard the station hadn't exactly made him feel welcome. Of course, perhaps that was his role being a man of the faiths so-to-speak. Still, he was glad to hear that Fenton's life had seemingly made a turn for the better. He was now the captain of his own ship, which was a far cry better than the all thumbs crewman he'd been back when they served on the same frigate.
"I tell you, those Naussicans were pissed that they lost their contract to me," Fen chuckled as he took a sip from his cup once more. He then shrugged nonchalantly. "However, they just couldn't offer the security that I was able to." Virgil nodded as he sipped his coffee and shook his head. "Wow, you've come a long way, Fen. I guess a lot has changed. I can't even believe that you managed to get hold of enough capital to buy Sully off. I never go the impression that he'd retire." The smile on Fen's face faded a bit and he shrugged at the comment. "He was made an offer that he couldn't refuse."
Virgil noticed the change in his demeanor and his eyes narrowed with a hint of suspicion. "And what does that mean. And how did you ever manage to save up enough to buy Sully off anyway?" Fen looked up from his cup and stared at Virgil. "I found a backer. One that was pretty persuasive in convincing Sully to take the offer." Virgil continued to stare at Fen as the pieces began to fall into place. The smile left his face and he closed his eyes as he thought he'd surmised how Fenton had gotten to where he was. "What are you doing here, Fen?"
Seeing no reason to keep up pretenses, Fen exhaled and leaned a little closer. "I need your help," said Fen. "I need you to--"
"To acquire your services," Virgil finished. "Tell me, in addition to what I request, what else is going to be in my cargo?" Virgil stared at him waiting for an answer, but quickly shook his head. "You know what, I don't want to know. You're going to have to find another way, Fen. In fact, you shouldn't even be involved in this."
Fen narrowed his eyes. "The Orion Syndicate isn't the sort of people you tell 'no.'" Virgil stared at him across the table and then slowly rose to his feet. "I suggest you be creative and find a way." He started to take his leave, but felt Fen's hand on his arm. "It's too late. The shipper you were using has already been bought off. And the first shipment is already en route." Fen took a deep breath and rested his hand on Virgil's shoulder. "It's okay, mate. I vouched for you. They're going to take care of you... make some very generous donations."
Virgil moved so quickly as he threw Fen's hand off his shoulder and grabbed him by the shirt as he pushed him against a wall. Many of the other patrons quickly turned in surprise as they watched the spiritual adviser make such an aggressive move. Fen stared back at him. "Careful, mate. That temper of yours got you into quite a bit of trouble once upon a time," Fen said.
Virgil glared at him, still holding him in place. A part of him wanted to drive his fist right into Fen's face. "How dare you?" he said. Of all the things he could have said, he had no right to bring up that night... not the night he'd lost Marika. Many of the people continued to stare, not believing the sight before them. "Be smart, Virg... be smart."
