For whatever reason, the old Willie Nelson song kept running through his mind. True, being on the Talon - running around the universe, saving planets, peoples, and the odd alien or two - wasn't REALLY being "on the road" but the metaphor was true. Then again, it wasn't.
After all, the Talon was his home. Didn't the old adage, "Your home is where your heart is," mean exactly that? His heart WAS here on the Talon. Gillian was here. Winona was here. The career path he'd chose and grown to love was here.
"So I guess I have the best of both worlds," Stetson opined aloud.
He looked at his desk, cluttered with administrative details with which he hadn't had to deal for a long time. Even those things didn't bother him - for now. It was a fact of life that he would grow to hate once again. Sometimes he wished he could just be a lowly j.g. again, without all the encumbrances of leadership. Retirement was too far away to offer any comfort or release from the droll and dreary aspects of the job.
"What I really ought to do is get Kinin in here to deal with it," Stetson grumbled, but he knew he could never do that. His XO was more a warrior than even he was, and he knew she'd rather fight a dozen other Klingons, bare-handed mind you, than do admin junk. Stetson laughed. "She'd beat them all and just write it off as exercise!"
Turning to the replicator, he ordered. "Bologna, cheese, and blackberry jelly on whole wheat bread sandwich, with glass of cold Diet Coke, no ice." Taking his lunch with him, he returned to his desk, put on some soothing Celtic music, and turned to the task at hand.
