Virgil raced down the corridor after the Bajoran girl. He had to admit, he was concerned. If the girl was really this ill, why wasn't she in the Infirmary? He would have asked, but he knew he had to keep the girl in sight. He was almost thankful when he saw her dart into a room, just a few doors ahead. His pace slowed a bit, just as he reached the door. As soon as he reached the threshold, a fist appeared out of nowhere and crashed into Virgil's jaw.
The blow, coupled with his own momentum, knocked the reverend off balance and sent him crashing into an end table as he fell to the floor. The door quickly shut, and he looked to see the Bajoran girl with her hand on the panel. Virgil's attention was then recaptured by the sight of a Nausican reaching down and lifting him to his feet only to deliver a strong back hand across his face and knocking him back to the floor once more. Just as he tried to get to his feet, he felt a swift pair of kicks to his side. It was hard enough for him to know that at least one... maybe two ribs had just been broken.
"Get him up," said a voice. The Nausican reached down and lifted Virgil once more. He could taste the blood in his mouth, as well as feel the slight trickle rolling from the corner of his mouth. He felt himself being restrained as some human came and helped the Nausican hold him in place. Virgil's eyes focused on the others in the room. He could see Fen staring at him. It should have been a comfort that he didn't seem especially happy with what had transpired, but the fact that he was demonstrated that it didn't matter what Fen thought. The power lay with the other individual.
Virgil looked at the man. He didn't recognize him, but from his appearance he was clearly the boss. Clearly, he knew how to line his pockets with latinum. "Who're you?" Virgil asked.
The man said nothing at first. The human let Virgil's arm go long enough to deliver a swift punch right in those injured ribs. A pained yelp escaped Virgil's mouth as he felt his knees buckle. The Nausican and the human hoisted Virgil back up. The sound of the mystery man taking a deep breath managed to get Virgil to refocus once more. "That really doesn't concern you, Mr. Cobb," the man announced. "What should concern you is your grievance. Fen here tells me that you'd wish to terminate our agreement." The man took a single step closer to Virgil and glared directly into the man's eyes. "This is my response."
A flurry of blows hit Virgil's abdomen, but with his injured ribs, it seemed twice as painful. The assault only lasted for a few moments before ending. "Enough." Virgil was released and quickly slumped to the floor. "Mr. Cobb, as you can see... I'm not a fan of renegotiating. So, our arrangement is going to continue as it has, but at half the compensation." Virgil was sure the man was delusional if he thought Virgil was going to cooperate after this. "And if not... well, you should know the Syndicate has a very long reach. Even as far as... Texas."
Virgil managed to look up at the man, who smiled and nodded. "And it appears we have an understanding," the man announced. "Now, if a demonstration needs to be made here on the station so that you know that we're serious...."
"No," said Virgil wincing in pain. He shook his head as he hand reached down to cradle his ribs. "That... that won't be necessary."
The man nodded. "Well, I'm glad to hear that," he said. He looked at all of his associates and then looked back at Virgil. "And Reverend... let's be smart and keep this conversation to ourselves. I think that would be the healthiest decision... for everyone."
As they left one by one, it was only Fen that paused. "I tried to warn you," he said simply to prove his point. "These aren't the people you say 'no' to." He then proceeded to leave with the others. As the doors slid shut, leaving Virgil alone in the abandoned apartment, he leaned over, wincing in pain. Clearly, a bad situation had just gotten worse. And sadly, Virgil knew that it was far from over.
