The botanical gardens were on the first of Wan’s list to explore when she arrived at SGE. She often told herself she had no time to care for plants but she admired them and those that took the time to nurture them. A friend she had at the medical academy explained gardening as a “zen” experience, which she found to be a completely archaic explanation, but she knew better than to nitpick at the woman who had left a chameleon rose in her quarters for her birthday. Incidentally, it was the chameleon rose that Wan was looking for. She did not care to admit to anyone that she wasted her time with nostalgia but she did find herself missing Starfleet Medical and, perhaps moreso, her friend.
When Wan entered the gardens, the waterfall caught her eye first but it quickly tired her and she directed her attention to the vast library of plants. The rare Antarian moon blossom, midnight orchids, Bajoran lilacs, Xupta trees, and even a Folnar jewel plant were among the plants she could identify at a glance. There were numerous others she could not, including a red moss that looked like Diomedian scarlet moss but she doubted it could flourish easily here. From what she had read, it was a very particular plant.
“I wonder how they manage to cultivate so many vastly different varieties of plants here in one area. Not even an airponics room,” she mumbled to herself as she walked along the river. With little workable knowledge on soil nutrients, she racked her mind for a feasible organization system, identifying what plants she could and trying to reason as to why they were planted together. When she happened upon where the roses were planted, she spotted one flower that had been wilting. Slender fingers slid up the golden stem, to the head that slouched solemnly among its thriving companions. She propped it up with delicate fingers. Its white petals began to slowly change hue to a pallid pink and then, white again.
“Why just this one?”
A hundred more puzzled questions entered her mind. Wan surveyed the gardens and hoped to find a stray botanist or hobbyist also enjoying the gardens so she might ask them to ease her curious mind but for the moment, it appeared, she was alone.
