"Funny that her family is still alive,"
Rychel frowned, wishing there was some way that she could comfort Dakbar. But she knew that the way things were right now, tensions were too high, and loyalties were still in question. Still, when was the last time someone properly cared for him? When was the last time he could discuss all the troubles that plagued him to someone who was sympathetic and loving? When could he last be himself? Rychel had seen glimpses of who he must have been before Miret had gotten his hands on Helik, and her heart ached.
“Our foes seek to destroy anything we care about, and more often than not are within our own organization.”
The casual manner with which Miret spoke, as though this was some commonplace experience that occurred to everyone, made Rychel feel sick. “Just because other people have done you wrong doesn’t mean you can just continue a cycle of violence and death,” she said.
“I had certain standards to maintain…” Miret began.
“You were in charge. You had every opportunity to motivate change…”
“Rychel, that’s not exactly how the Obsidian Order operates,” Desan interjected.
“It’s extremely cut throat. If I tried to make change, they would have just killed me and another tyrant would have taken control,” Miret added.
Rychel wasn’t satisfied, but she remained silent.
“It was my intent that she would return to the Talon and speak to you.”
Rychel was tempted to speak again, but as she looked over at Desan, he shook his head. She decided to bite her tongue for the time being. But once Miret had a chance to explain himself, there were questions that she needed answering. Though… she suspected Helik would demand to know the same things.
“I dedicated my life to the Order, to the exclusion of all else.”
She knew her brother’s dedication to his career, and she suspected that with all Miret had lost, that he was even more motivated. Would Desan end up at the end of his life, wishing that he’d started a family? Somehow, she wagered that Desan was more than content to live those aspects vicariously through his siblings.
Her mind turned to a more fanciful bent; a place she’d never before allowed it to go. To a future with Dakbar, where he was no longer controlled by outside forces. Would Desan ever allow her to have a real relationship with Helik?
She closed her eyes briefly, fighting the thoughts away. There was still no guarantee that Dakbar wouldn’t be going to jail. Or, she added more reluctantly, that he would wish to continue association with her after everything that had occurred.
”I reported to the Order and told them she was deceased, then hid her in a location where no one would think to look for her.”
Rychel realized where Miret was going, and she stepped closer to Dakbar, her action a gesture of support. Though she doubted she couldn’t do anything else, she hoped her closeness would help ease his mind.
”I’ll be able to find your family, and Deputy Director Kayden has agreed to extend Starfleet protective custody to them all.”
She gasped at Desan’s title, upon finally learned what his rank insignia truly meant. She recovered composure quickly, though, slightly embarrassed that she’d not understood that fact of her own accord. The final puzzle pieces were all falling in order, and she was able to see the big picture… assuming everyone was being honest thus far.
“And then the Order would no longer have power over you.”
She looked to Dakbar, unable to fight away the hope that was clear in her eyes. Please…
