“And you didn’t even know what he was.”
Out of all the statements made today, this was the most troubling. Dakbar had not just attempted to kill a simple security officer, he had almost taken the life of the Deputy Director of Starfleet Intelligence. If he wasn't already in deep trouble, that would be the clincher. Dakbar knew he had to continue to be valuable to Desan, otherwise his life would be forfeit.
Rychel continued to argue her point, even going as far as pulling the Starfleet card, but Desan and the doctor had other ideas. Rest, at least for now. Not that she had much of a choice after falling to the floor in exhaustion, her own body betraying her strong words.
“I just need to know…”
Knowledge was not what she needed.
“I want her confined to bedrest. If you need her to do anything, you’ll need to find some way for her to do it between naps from a bed.”
Oh, that wasn't going to go over well.
“She is rational. She forgives if she believes the grievance was warranted given the circumstances. She is nowhere near as forgiving when there is no logical reason.”
Dakbar considered all of the times Rychel had forgiven him. He remembered her trusting eyes as he tore at her body, stopping himself because of them. Desan was wrong. There was no rational reason for her to trust him. None. And now, even after it was revealed who he had been during that time, she still trusted him. Where in that resided a rational mind?
“She is not the only one who believes in you. The Order forms men into tools. Just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean that your heart is in it.”
Having been on the receiving end of those tools, Dakbar wasn't so sure. He had seen an almost heady delight in the eyes of his captors. Maybe Miret no longer had the heart for it, but there were others still working who loved the job, loved breaking someone down and torquing their psyche. As the younger Cardassian met the eyes of Miret, Desan detailed Dakbar's incarceration, stuck on a deck that didn't exist. "I understand," he said to Desan.
He walked back to Rychel and took a knee next to her chair. "Keep your eyes open," he said to her. He was not referring to the sedative the doctor had given, but a caution for the future. Rising, he moved back to Desan. "Put me where you will," he said, resigning himself to his fate.
