When he awoke, his head was pounding.
It took a few minutes for his mind to fumble around and figure out where he was, and why he was in such a state. His first guess was alcohol, but he'd worked the night before and generally he didn't drink to much excess while working. He couldn't take any risks, not with so much on the line.
As he remembered, he sat bolt upright in bed, his hands darting to the bedside table where he normally kept his hypospray. When it wasn't there, his heart began to race, and he jumped out of bed, swaying slightly as his body struggled to compensate. Spying the hypospray to the left of the table, he let out a quick sigh of relief. The vial in it was empty, probably from his last night's dosage, and he ejected it quickly. The vial fell to the floor with a clatter, but he didn't notice it over the sound of his heart pounding in his ears.
His hands shook as he fumbled with the locking mechanism on the table, withdrawing another vial, and sliding it in to the hypospray. He then pressed the hypospray to his neck, the telltale his notifying him that relief was on it's way. Tossing the hypospray aside, he laid heavily back down on the bed.
He wasn't sure how long he was out for, for it seemed like at some point he'd fallen asleep, but when he awoke, he felt a calm, happy feeling. He sighed in contentment, rolling around on his bed, letting the satin sheets caress his nude form. He felt good. He felt perfect. He felt like he could take on the entire galaxy if he tried.
Looking at the chronometer, he saw that he still had a few hours before his shift, so he relaxed back into the bed, drifting off into another nap.
