It was no surprise that the scene Eden had unintentionally created drew the looks of the surrounding patrons. Even a mildly curious mind would turn their attention to the disturbers of their peace. What surprised Aaron was the disapproving looks some of that same crowd gave not to the waiter, but to Eden. To Eden?! How could they be anything less than impressed and satisfied that a scumbag like that was put in his place? He heard a comment about "a ladies behavior" and grew angry. What kind of archaic belief system were they running on? Eden couldn't defend herself because she was a woman? What a waste of marvelous potential if every woman followed such logic. Aaron had two words to say to that: punch on.
"Ha! I think a handful of my bosom is more a tip than he deserves."
Aaron tried to laugh. He really, really tried, but the humor of her joke was spoiled by the truth that rang through it. His friend had been violated, however briefly, in front of him. He just couldn't find it in him to laugh about that. The shame and sadness of the incident weighed too heavily.
"Why are you sorry? You ain't responsible for all of male kind, Mr. Kynston- Aaron. Mr. Aaron Kynston."
He smiled. She could call him whatever she wanted. That was her gift for the rest of tonight. As for her question, Aaron merely shrugged as he aided her recovery efforts. "Because someone has to make up for men like that."
It wasn't a perfect solution. There is no one-to-one, good-outweighs-the-bad kind of math in this world. Not with people. Bad things that happened to good people left a mark. The scars from those bad things didn't just go away with a magic touch of goodness. But that didn't mean that a soothing touch didn't help. If his words, or his actions, could act as a healing touch to someone who had suffered wrong, than Aaron had no choice but to speak. How selfish would he be not to? How cruel would he be to withhold that? Eden certainly deserved it, and so much more.
"For a minute there I thought I was gonna have to hold you back, you might be feistier than you look."
Now he was able to laugh. Him...in a fight? He'd become the evening's entertainment; genre: comedy. Aaron could probably fight as well as a Vulcan could do stand-up comedy. Even more, he'd be ashamed to fight in front of Eden, simply because she'd see him follow everything she learned NOT to do.
But they didn't fight. Eden fought for herself, and proved yet again why she deserved her commission, and why she deserved a peaceful night, with or without him.
"Maybe."
He had to admit that to hear her say it was sadder than imagining her say it. He'd just started to get comfortable. There was so much to say, and so much more to do. He would not fight her, but Aaron knew that he'd be sad to say good-bye to Eden so soon.
"I think this place has a vendetta against my clothes."
Aaron paused in his cleaning and chuckled. She must have had a run of bad luck to have this happen to her twice. He certainly didn't make her out to be a klutz. "Maybe it's best to frequent another place before you lose your clothes altogether."
He stopped when he noticed a particularly foul sight coming towards them.
"Turns out I, um, lost your tab so I guess you guys don't owe anything."
With no lack of disdain, Aaron simply stared at the waiter. Was that really the best he could come up with? True, he could have cowered in the back until they left. So he wasn't a complete coward. But a bribe? No. Put down that damn tray, look her straight in the eye, and own up. Then, maybe then, could he find some respect in Aaron's eyes. He found no small amount of pleasure when Eden snatched his "protection", and issued her ultimatum.
"If I so much as hear a rumor that you've tried that mess with anyone else I will make it my personal mission to rain down on you like holy fire and end you, do I make myself clear."
She'd been nicer on him than he would have been. He still wanted to speak to Mac about this, if not for her justice, than for the other's who might fall under his wandering tentacles. But...that was Eden's choice, and the image of the man hanging by his toes before Eden's honey-filled smile gave him enough incentive to remain silent.
Hell hath no fury?
When the waiter scurried off to his hole, Aaron found her looking at him with another one of those Eden-charming expressions. How could anyone possible dislike that woman? Maybe if they had pure hatred in their heart. Even then, she'd probably just hug them and turn it to gold.
"Well," Aaron started. "I discovered this shop a little ways away that sells the most fascinating--" Before he even finished, the very obnoxious klaxons began sounding throughout the room. There was no mistaking what it meant: red alert. His heart jumped. Was this a drill? They hadn't announced a drill.
Hailey. Where was Hailey? Please, God...Captain Raal...whoever the hell could do something about it...please let her be safe. Aaron looked to his friend and confidant with serious concern.
"I'm guessing this is where we part ways?" She was, after all, a Starfleet officer. Even if she was not assigned to SGE, they may need her, and if one more officer was what it took to ensure the lives of innocent people--of Hailey--then he'd shove her out the door and to Security himself.
Would they accept academy drop-outs as volunteers?
