Personality: Julie is smart and ambitious, although modest with it. That doesn't mean she is above using her skills to full effect, and is proud of herself for her achievements.
Although outgoing, caring and at times even maternal, Julie is quick witted and has a tendency toward sarcasm. Especially when the pressure is on, but she knows when to be professional and always gets the job done to the best of her abilities. Even if she has been known to wander off on the odd tangent!
When confronted, she is the type to smile sweetly and be perhaps attempt to be a little too polite with her enemies. She would say that this is because she prefers to be diplomatic and avoid direct conflict, but others would probably agree that she secretly enjoys annoying such people further!
Although trained in communications, she has also been known to allow the occasional local slang slip out. She mostly speaks professionally when on duty though.
Mostly optimistic, she considers herself a realist. Julie lives by the principle of always hoping for the best but expecting the worst. It doesn't mean that she will give up without trying, in fact quite the opposite!
Background and History: Born and raised in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, Earth, Julie is one of three children, having two brothers. Her father was, and still is, a linguistics professor at the local college and her mother a dentist. She supposes this is where she got 'the gift of the gab, meaning her fascination and talent at learning other languages all while sporting the perfect smile!
Studying hard at school, Julie's tutors suggested that she take things further with her ability to quickly grasp and recognise languages other than her own, implored her to consider further education and further her linguistics skills. This led her to move on to apply for a degree in the topic, after which she decided to follow in her the footsteps of her older brother, William, and apply for Starfleet Academy. She had considered teaching and following in the footsteps of her father, but the more she thought about it the more she decided that she wanted to be more hands on with her skills.
Although older than a lot of the fresh face eighteen-year-old cadets, Julie had little problem mixing with her peers and threw herself into her studies. Having earned a high grade in her degree course, it was obvious in which field she wished to study in.
Upon graduation, Julie was assigned to the USS Sagittarius as a junior linguistic and communications officer, furthering her skills. She remained here for several years, earning a promotion to Lieutenant junior grade and then to full Lieutenant.
Just under a month after her second promotion, and her taking over as the Sagittarius senior communications officer, the war with the Klingons broke out. Monitoring the Neutral Zone, the ship was eventually called in to assist with the battle for Earth, resulting in heavy damage to the ship and her crew. Although she survived, her brother (a doctor on board another ship) wasn't so lucky, as both he and the vessel on which he served were lost.
Counting their losses, the crew limped back to Spacedock where they were all told to await new orders. Returning home to grieve with her family, Julie nevertheless eagerly awaits said new orders while aiding with the rebuilding efforts taking place across the world.

Sample Roleplay: As another wave of energy rocked the ship, it took Julie everything she had to remain in her seat and with her ear piece firmly in the place for which it was named for. She had been tasked with searching for and monitoring any communications and signals that contained information that could be used by the attacking Klingons fleet. Now was the time for both her degree in linguistics and her Starfleet training in code breaking and deciphering to be used to full effect. Cracking the varying encrypted messages and signals emanating from the enemy vessels could be the difference between going home and not having a home to go to! So no pressure then, she thought, relieved that at least she wasn't likely the only person on the job.
There were many allied ships, Federation and otherwise, assisting in the battle, all of which wanted the same as she herself did - to survive and go home! Most were not going to be so lucky, especially if like her they were juggling with concentration on such a difficult task while attempting to block out the blaring red alert klaxon and the constant shuddering and crashing as they were hot by weapons fire. At least it meant that she didn't have to watch the view screen as all this happened, powerless to do anything. At least if she failed, if they all failed, then they had tried their hardest!
"I need that translation, Lieutenant, Captain Greaves urgently reminded her as she continued to try and do just that with the encrypted message that they had been able to intercept. Being a far smaller vessel than most present afforded them the luxury of being able to hang back and hopefully pull off a miracle.
"I'm trying captain, but there's a canny bit to get through here. Just one more level of encryption to go...", she then added, praying that it wasn't something mundane like the guest list or menu for the party they would be throwing when both Earth and the Federation were little more than space dust. She was rather confident that would never happen, especially if this message happened to be something worthwhile!
