Personality:
At first glance, it's a wonder why Ruby Scott managed to get into the Academy in the first place. She's impulsive, she's impatient, she has a severe case of foot-in-mouth syndrome, and frankly, she's got a bad habit of taking whatever risks she has to take for the most direct result. She's blunt, and she's not afraid to dish out the same amount of respect (or lack thereof) that she gets. But on the flip side, she's not stupid; actually, she's quite intelligent. She's adventurous, she loves her work, she's enthusiastic about life, and she's caring. She's respectful to those she feels deserve it, and she has a little talent of letting her big mouth worm its way into the soft spot of people's hearts. Plus, with age and experience, she is getting better, much better than she was when she was a bratty eighteen year old.
Background and History:
Ruby was born on Earth, specifically in the state of New York, to a pair of artists. Yep. Artists. She knew it was the corniest backstory she could've ever had. Two artists who decided to just follow their hearts and create art, landed with an unplanned baby girl. The worst part, they called the girl by a boy's name; Reuben, because they would be damned if they would follow any conventional Terran naming process, right? But that wasn't all these bohemian lovebirds were going to give their daughter; they wanted her to have a unique childhood, or as unique as one could get. So, they travelled a lot. They lived in a lot of areas of Earth, particularly in the US, and must have lived in ten different homes by the time Ruby was five years old.
When Ruby had to start going to school, they finally settled in a loft in the middle of San Francisco and let their little one go to school. They had started educating their child long before the school system got a hold of her though, and so the girl read and learned at a higher level than most of her peers. By the time she was four, she was capable of reading a chapter of a novel every night to her parents. By the end of her first year, her teachers were asking if she could skip a grade, to which her parents replied negatively. They wanted her to be able to interact with her peers, and interact she did.
She learned from a young age that she wanted to be a doctor. She liked helping people and talking to people, she was the first to come to a kid's defense when they were in trouble, and the first to try to clean up cuts and scrapes when they got hurt. She often got into trouble for taking matters into her own hands, but her parents were the type to encourage her to stand up for others and to herself, no matter what.
She held a relatively normal childhood; she wasn't a girly girl, but she was a tomboy. She declared her desire to be a doctor and stuck to her studies to make it there, but it wasn't until she was older that it even became a possibility that she could go into Starfleet. Most people didn't think that she had the temperament for such an undertaking. Well, most people could tell her what she could and could not do, and frankly, Starfleet was a good way to apply her passions to a profession, and maybe have a more solid life than that of her parents.
When she got into the Academy, man, that was a rough first year. She was the kid that had to be disassembled personally just to turn into something that resembled a young, not-arrogant woman. She looked back on it sometimes and she wondered why the hell she even still had a career at this point. But she made it through with the help of swallowing her ego, and went on to Starfleet Med. She graduated right before the final assault made by the Klingons in 2409, and due to the invasion she was sent directly to the front lines to treat the injured. It was a sobering experience, and a trial by fire for the young graduate. She doesn't talk much about it, but it was the motivation she needed to apply for the USS Talon after the Klingon occupation, and it showed her superiors one trait that they didn't count on about her; her ability to keep her head in a critical situation.

Sample Roleplay: "Hey, watch it!" The medic was only just coming on for her night shift, and she had already prevented a clumsy mishap; some poor ensign (and damn, she was a cute one too) had been about to spill several instruments on the ground. Lucky for her, Reuben Scott was right behind her, catching the tray they had rested on nimbly in one hand. She leaned around the ensign to place the tray back in the proper place, and patted the ensign on the shoulder.
"Wanna reorganize that while I get prepped for the shift? Thanks sweetie!" Did she know that ensign's name? Wasn't it... uh... did it matter? She was now Sweetie. Until she found another name. Which was odd, cause she'd seen the ensign working for quite a while. She walked with a bounce in her step to her station and grabbed a thin black slab off of one of the desks. With a few button presses she was logging something into the computer on the slab and she cleared her throat.
"Alright. Alright. Mmm. Yep. Kay. Ugh." She flicked through the list on the device and gave personal commentary on each of the cases she had to watch over for the night, and then she cleared her throat and took a breath. Putting on her best bedside manner, she walked with purpose towards the first bed, a smile on her face and a demeanour that meant business in her step.
