Personality: Gul Marak is a very proud individual, the shining example of a proper military leader. His loyalties are first and foremost with the Cardassian Central Command, as well as the current Cardassian government. As the highest ranking member of the Cardassian military stationed on Sark Nor, Marak will often hold himself as the governor of the base, despite it not being an offical title.
That said, while Marak doesn't look down on other species, he judges them quite harshly, mostly due to his beliefs about the base itself. The key source of his frustration to the people here is the lack of any administration, and the lack of a command center. Gul Marak hopes to one day establish a proper hold on the base for Cardassia.
Background and History: Marak grew up in a beaten and desolate Cardassia, one that was trying to get back on its feet following the Dominion War. While he himself did not witness the might that was the old government, the stories he was told by his father, Quim Marak, told of a real force in the Quadrant, one that was respected and feared by all, including the Klingons and the Federation. Marak joined the military as soon as he was able to, and quickly rose through the ranks in the rather light force that made up the defense fleet.
His chance to make a name for himself came with the discover of the Cardassian Wormhole. With it's discovery, Cardassia had no need to go to that backwater planet to use the Bajoran Wormhole, and now Cardassia had a new source of power. When the military commanders were asked their opinion, Glim Marak pushed his Gul to establish a foothold in the Quadrant, his voice among others who felt the same. However, the government decided against it, not wanting to provoke other powers. Marak was furious, but when his own Gul agreed with it, he silenced himself, working instead to unsurp power from his commanding officer.
It finally happened when a routine mission ended disaterously, and the Gul was knocked out completely. He was pulled off the ship due to injury, and Marak was promoted to Gul, of the 11th Order. With his newfound power, Marak pushed for more of a return to tradition, and taking command of the wormhole itself. Again, however, he was denied, and certainly rubbed some of the celebrated leaders wrong. Instead of removing him, the council handled Marak by assigning him to the other side of the wormhole, to guard the wormhole and inspect each and every craft before they entered into the Alpha quadrant. While a thankless job, and one he despises, Gul Marak has agreed, and works his best to see his job through, even if he knows that his reports are being stored somewhere and not read.

Sample Roleplay: "You are making an idiotic mistake!" Marak shouted, his fists clenched. He sat on the bridge of his ship, one of the new post-war Galor class vessels that he affectionally called the Herimal. Unfortunately for the bridge, this wasn't one of those affectionate times. Instead, Marak slammed a fist into the panel on his armrest.
"Believe what you will, Marak. We gave everyone a say in this, and your voice was drowned out by the majority. Thats what a democracy means, Marak. The base on the moon will not be subject to an invasion."
The reply came from Central Command.. or the neutered dog that used to be Central Command. Gone were the days when the military handled the protection and advancement of Cardassia. Now it was a nothing but a Federation-like planet. And it usually inflamed the Gul. This time, however, it went personal.
"Your assignment stands. You are hereby ordered to Sark Nor, where you will ensure the safety of the new Union and keep the wormhole safe. We will not be setting up a station like Terok Nor by our side of the wormhole. It will be under the jurisdiction of the rest of your Order. Is that understood?" There was that question again. Understood? Who did they think he was, some klingon brute? He might not agree with it, but he would never jeopardize the Union.
"Of course I do, and you know that I will perform to the best of my ability. Is it just the Herimal?" he said, bringing a fist under his chin. There was no winning by fighting and showing that you can't be trusted.
"On that, you have some good news. I'm ordering three other ships under your care. That should be more than sufficiant to handle Sark Nor and the wormhole. If you're lucky, you may also get some help from the Federation or the Klingons. Now, go! Central Command out."
The screen turned off to show the star field again, and the Gul slammed his fist into the console again. If they were going to exile him to the Gamma quadrant, fine. He would do the best job he could, and make himself a leader in Central. That should help bring the Union to his rightful place again. For now, it was time for the badlands.
"As soon as you get the ships assigned to us, tell them to get to the station as fast as they can. If I had to be there, they have to be there just as long if not longer. Helm, bring us about, and set a course for the Gamma Quadrant. Sark Nor is our new home. We best get comfortable." he said, as the ship turned and went to warp.
