She could remember the last time she'd felt this way... nervous. The only thing that time had taught her was that she'd despised it as much now as she did back then. She didn't find herself nervous very often. Usually, she was always confident... always sure of herself. She could examine a situation and know how best to treat the condition. She could think of only one occasion where her confidence faltered. Only one time when she wasn't sure of herself and questioned her own convictions. And like a fool, she had invited that reason to her apartment on this very evening.
She stared in the mirror, gazing at her reflection. This was the third wardrobe change, in the past ten minutes and it wasn't as if she hadn't considered wearing nothing at all. That, however, may have proven too presumptuous. She'd be placing herself in a vulnerable position, and she had no intention of doing that. No, she needed to keep her wits about her. She needed to stay in control in case things didn't go according to plan.
Fate had decided to grant her the opportunity to resolve things once and for all. There was no other way to explain it. How else could they both end up in the Gamma Quadrant of all places. Her mind drifted back to the torturous conditions they'd been forced to work under. The weather itself was always so hot and humid. The entire community plagued by that virus that no one had been well enough to attempt to repair the weather control network surrounding the community. A soft sigh escaped her mind as she found herself thinking about working all sweaty and miserable one moment and the image being quickly replaced by a tangle of sweat-dampened flesh and a rush of euphoria.
She was almost grateful for the chime from the door. Her eyes found the chronometer. He was early... typical. He was always so eager to get started. Always so sure that he'd solve any problem in front of him. Part of her wondered if that confidence ever wavered. Perhaps it was time to find out.
Auri moved towards the door. She knew he would have never made it this far without the consent of her guards, whom her father insisted always remained close. At least they'd come to understand the boundaries she'd set for them. She stood in front of the door for a few seconds, almost regretting having sent the invitation to begin with. Her eyes looked over her shoulder. All the niceties had been observed... she had even found something akin to what humans called champagne. She thought he'd appreciate the gesture of trying something new together. Dinner would arrive within the hour. There was only one thing left to do.
Her hand pressed the panel and the doors soon parted. Her eyes fell upon him, and she soon realized that he had modestly aged. But there was still something ever-youthful about his eyes. "Hello... Ozzy," she said softly. The name hadn't left her lips since the last time she'd seen him. Doctor Bernard Osler-Drew... she knew his name. She recognized it as soon as she saw managed to learn some of the names of those serving on the ship. But to her... he was Ozzy. A long time a go it had been a foolish gesture. A pet name... an endearing one like her mother had given her. She had no idea how much she had missed uttering it until it had spoken it just now. She stepped aside, silently granting him passage to enter. She took a deep breath, hoping that it would calm the incessant thudding in her chest.
