Personality:
Nicholas is in love with life. He wants to experience everything at least once. He was never afraid to ask questions as a child, although Starfleet Academy has taught him to be a bit more reserved and diplomatic. He was never one to stay inside too much, he has to be out there, flying, fighting, drinking, loving. He wants to feel alive and he normally does.
Background and History:
Nicholas was born to two Starfleet officers on the USS Paul Bunyan. His father was the Chief Science Officer and his mother an engineer. Both parents instilled in him a thirst for knowledge and a love of life and others.
The Barnes had a close family unit. Nicholas had only one older sister who had become estranged to the family, but all four of them were close. It was a sad day when the sister left but Nicholas’ parents had a live and let live philosophy. They had always hoped that she would start correspondence but never has.
There was always plenty to do for a young boy on a galaxy class starship. However, Nicholas was always partial to the shuttlebay. Not that he was allowed in there, but he had managed to sneak in once or twice in his tenure. That began his love for flight. He was expected to join the Academy and in general do well for himself. Which of course he did. As expected his parents gently prodded him towards science and technical aspirations. Not wanting to give up flight he managed to get his mother on his side by explaining to her how his knowledge of shuttlecraft avionics and ship propulsion definitely pandered to his expected genius.
Nicholas did very well on his exams despite nearly missing them entirely. That day he was distracted by conversation with a rather beautiful bolian female and loss track of time. He was fortunate enough to only get a reprimand from the examining Lieutenant.
Nicholas’ time in the Academy was not extraordinary. He slept, not often in his own quarters, he went to class and performed slightly above average. As a matter of fact, despite how grateful he is, he is not sure how he landed a prestigious posting on the USS Talon.
After the Academy, Nicholas was posted aboard the USS Cambridge, serving as a junior helmsman and smallcraft pilot. After a seven month rotation he was posted aboard the Talon.

Sample Roleplay:
Nicholas ran, no, he bolted down the Cambridge’s corridor. He was running late for his duty shift. Again. Nicholas had never actually been late for a duty shift but there had been many a time he had to double time it to the bridge. The reason was always the same of course: either he was trying to talk his way into a shipmate’s quarters or was scrambling out of one.
He was no cad in any respect. He just enjoyed the pleasure of the company of others and pleasure of the experience; for all his senses. For his taste he enjoyed good food and drink. For his ears; good conversation and music delighted him. Smell? Well be it perfume or baked good, you can be sure that his nose was not far behind. His eyes danced in a museum or art gallery. Not to mention the beauty in others. Yes! That was it! Nicholas was on a constant search of new beauty. That was the true allure of a starship. New surroundings. New people. New discoveries. They were all beautiful to him.
Touch was the last sensation. A hand shake. A hug. Sex, of course. All these things resonated deep within Nicholas. He had a reputation for being promiscuous, but depending on point of view it was not well earned.
“You are very nearly late, ensign.” Lieutenant Fields frowned at him as he relieved her. “I hate to put anyone on report, but the Captain is a stickler for punctuality.”
“Am I on report, then?” Asked a rather crestfallen Nicholas.
“No,” sighed Fields. “Only because you are not actually late. Just consider this a warning, ensign.”
“Yes, sir. Happy Christmas.”
