Personality: Mark is a fairly lighthearted person, but is easily capable of being serious when the situation calls for it. He is friendly and funny, and often has a joke, kind word, or a smile to brighten everyone's day. He likes to surround himself with friends, enjoying the company of others. He is intelligent and enjoys reading and learning to advance his education.
Background and History: Mark was born in a small town in rural South Carolina in 2386 to a physician and a nurse. He had one sibling, an older sister named Sarah. Even from a young age, Mark was in advanced classes, excelling in science and history. He spent lots of time outside as a young boy, playing soldier and exploring as much as he could around his town with his friends, and with his sister when he could convince her to come along. Over the years, Mark and Sarah grew very close, with Sarah becoming his best friend. His exploring tendencies and his interests in science developed further into his teenage years, both of them furthered by his parents, who expected him to become a Starfleet doctor. He and his sister started to grow apart somewhat as she attended Starfleet Academy and then went on Starfleet Medical to become a physician, just as her father was. As Mark approached graduation from high school, he began to realize that he didn't want to shoulder as much responsibility as a doctor, even though he wanted to still pursue a career in medicine, perhaps even with Starfleet.
After he graduated high school, Mark decided he wanted to join Starfleet as a medic, which would allow him to join the fleet at 22, instead of having to attend Starfleet Med to become a doctor, which not only would delay his entry into the fleet until 26, but shoulder him with more responsibility than he cared for. He enlisted into Starfleet Academy, and excelled in his courses. He graduated in June of 2408, and was assigned to an Akira-class starship patrolling the Federation-Klingon border. When the war began, his ship was on the front lines, battling the Klingons frequently. His ship was involved in many of the battles of the war, including the Battle of Earth in July 2409. Immediately after the battle, Mark was detailed to a relief team sent to the surface. While on the surface, he discovered that both his parents had been killed, and his sister He spent weeks sifting through rubble and treating survivors at hospitals across the surface. Once his assignment there was complete, he was promoted to transferred to the Talon.

Sample Roleplay: Mark walked into Sickbay for his assigned duty shift and reported in to the Chief Medical Officer.
"Morning, sir."
"Good morning, Ensign. Lieutenant Young has your assignment for today."
Mark nodded respectfully and turned, walking over to the Lieutenant, a doctor. The doc nodded at Mark.
"We're going to be doing physicals and routine preventative care. For the most part, I'm going to let you handle the physicals. They aren't anything you can't handle."
Mark smiled. He liked doing the preventative care almost as much as he liked the emergency stuff. Sure, it wasn't as exciting, but it was fulfilling. He enjoyed doing anything in his power to keep his crewmates out of Sickbay, especially when the reason they would be there was preventable.
"Yes sir. I'll get started right away, sir." He turned and introduced himself to the first crewman and started the routine vitals check when he was interrupted. Emergency lights flashed on, the alarm sounded, and everyone that didn't work in Sickbay dashed out as the call for battlestations came over the comms. The CMO informed the Sickbay crew that a Klingon bird of prey had engaged the ship. Mark and the other crew quickly prepared to receive casualties as the ship shook, taking fire from the Klingon vessel.
As casualties started to arrive, the CMO assigned duties. A nurse and the senior medic were assigned to triage patients as they arrived, and the rest of the Sickbay personnel were divvied up into treatment sectors. Mark was assigned to treat delayed patients with one of the shift doctors. Pulling out his medical tricorder, he scanned the first patient. She had a fractured femur and several hematomas and bruises.
"Hey, I'm Mark, I'm gonna get you fixed up, okay?" he said, smiling reassuringly as he got out a hypospray and filled it with a dose of pain meds. "I'm gonna give you something to make the pain better," he said, administering the medicine. He got out the osteoregenerator and started work on her femur, repairing it. Once he had finished with it, he moved on to her hematomas and contusions, quickly repairing them.
He finished quickly and moved on to the next patient. There was work to be done.
