Personality: Jamie is a laid back officer, not lazy, but relaxed. He has a calm and prudent nature, but is also sarcastic, and a bit of jokester. He does, of course, show the proper respect to his superior officer, only trading jokes and jabs with his peers. Jamie is, to an extent, reserved small talk with strangers not being his forte, for instance. He enjoys conversing and spending time with his friends, as well as the satisfaction of a job well done. Jamie also indulges in holo-fantasies in his free time, making sure of course to avoid getting lost in them. In terms of anger and frustration, Jamie’s relaxed nature helps mitigate stress and annoyances that crop up from time to time. He generally has a high tolerance for such things, taking repetitive prodding to really become angry. However, if he is being pressed on an issue he wants dropped, his temper is notably shortened.
Background and History: Born in the city of San Sebastián, Jamie would not stay there long. Only a few months after his birth, he joined his family on The USS Magellan, a Constellation-Class Cruiser. This was, except for brief periods where he was on shore leave with his family, his home. He grew up on the Magellan, his father being helmsman and his mother an information systems specialist. Growing up on the ship would make Jamie realize how lucky he was to have two parents on the same ship. He of course would make friends in the Magellan’s school, and he received an excellent education. However he found the classroom boring, despite performing well, it all seemed too limited. He much preferred the rare times he could visit his mother at work (not, obviously, being allowed to visit his father on the bridge), as he had a knack for computers, enjoying helping his mother at work, not that he did much of course. Besides, he was more interested in one of her co-workers, who served as computer core specialist during her ship. He was a family friend, and would introduce Jamie to the computer core when he was 13. This was the moment Jamie realized what he wanted to do. Granted, Starfleet was always his intended future, but he had never been completely certain of what he would be doing. Now however, he was focused on being a computer core specialist.
The rest of his time on the Magellan passed more quickly, or that is how it seemed to Jamie. He continued doing well academically, and avoided getting into serious trouble. When he was eighteen, he successfully applied to Starfleet Academy, cementing his future with Starfleet. Jamie became very excited for the Academy, and for the first time he was truly anxious. But the date came for his departure, and he left his home. It was so strange, really, he had never been away from the Magellan for more than a month, and now it felt as though he would never return.
His years at the Academy proved both grueling and wonderful. The Academy, for all its rules and regulations, offered him far more freedom than he had ever had on the Magellan, but of course this came with much more responsibility. He found the coursework challenging, even though his first couple of years was largely the generic and required courses. Still he made life-long friends during this time, as well as a strong appreciation for the simple things, like walking through a real park, or even just sunlight on his skin.
His next two years were noticeably different, the pressure increased quickly, as he specialized in computer science and programming courses, as well as computer architecture and basic engineering courses too. He even went so far as to take a few courses in communications and linguistics, proving to be an adequate candidate for a communications officer. He further supplementing his computer-based courses with advanced astronomy and basic astrophysics. Additionally, he surprised even himself with a talent for piloting, nothing too extraordinary, but it certainly gave his father a smile. Unlike most people, Jamie would continue for another year as part of an advanced degree program in computer science and architecture.
His last year at the Academy was the hardest by far, the courses were highly advanced and his workload was tremendous. These two years left him more nervous than anything had, even more than when he first attended the academy. He pushed through, though his friends had already left for their various assignments, leaving him feeling rather alone. After the hardest courses he had ever taken, Jamie’s ordeal was over. He passed, in the top 10 of the program, in fact. Jamie was relieved to have passed, even though he knew that compared to the real world, his time in the Academy was a cakewalk.
Out of the Academy, Ensign Ruiz was assigned, much to his satisfaction, to the USS Trailblazer as a computer core specialist, this happening in late 2406. Jamie put everything into his job for the first few months, dealing with the challenges of adapting to the Trailblazer, as opposed to the Academy, though his time on the Magellan did help. After those first few months however, Jamie got into something of a routine, and became a much more accommodating bunkmate, as he had been a rather poor one until that point, and Jamie began making friends and building relationships on the Trailblazer, not hard given his position involved helping people, and he did rather well in his position. By 2408 he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, having performed diligently in his post. Just a few months ago, he was promoted again, and now stands as a full Lieutenant, eager to prove himself as much as ever.
It was shortly after this that he was reassigned to the soon to be commissioned USS Talon-A, though his excitement turned to anxiety upon learning he would be one of two computer core specialists on the ship. Still, he decided to make the best of the situation. After all, this was the sort of thing that could build his career. He has only just arrived at DS10, by way of shuttle, expecting to embark on the Talon when it returns fromits maiden voyage to supplement its skeleton crew. He is about to find, however, that things are much more hectic than he had expected.

Lieutenant Ruiz walked into the lift, glad he was a little ahead of schedule today. Mondays were always the worst for his workload.
“Computer, Deck 14 please.”
There was a slight chirp, and then the lift moved, quickly taking him to his destination. One might think it odd to ask, rather than order or demand, the computer to do something, after all that’s what most people did, but Jamie K. Ruiz was not your average Starfleet officer. No, Jamie worked with the computer every day, he liked to think of it as his coworker, more than just a machine. His superiors wrote it off, the eccentricities of an otherwise model officer, and most people just thought of it as another one of Jamie’s quirks, albeit a more noticeable one.
Jamie, on this Monday morning, was thinking of his plans to hit the lounge after his shift, relax a little, even if he’s probably stick to something syntheholic. Just then the lift slowed to stop, and doors opened. He walked quickly, a habit from his Academy days he had yet to shake, weaving through the labyrinth of corridors until he reached his office. It was small, only enough room for his desk, console, a locker and a PADD repair station. He was only here on Monday and Thursday mornings, from 09:00 until 12:30, and the afternoon shift on Wednesday from 13:00 until 16:30, otherwise he was in the preferable computer core room, where he made sure all computer anomalies were resolved, ideally before they caused damage. This place on the other hand, well, let’s just say he spent more time here as an ensign.
Sitting in his chair, he opened up a recent paper discussing an attempt to replicate the positronic brain of the Soong-type android. He had not gotten far when he received an alert from his console, the second grade teacher was contacting him. He initiated the voice communication.
“Hello, this is computer specialist Lieutenant Ruiz, what seems to be the problem?” Ruiz asked.
“This is Mrs. Kowalski, my second graders have been having difficulties using our classroom computer. Whenever they try to access the databanks it freezes, and a minute later it returns to the homepage.”
“Okay Mrs. Kowalski, hold on for a moment, I’ll see if I can fix this remotely.”
“Thank you Lieutenant.”
Jamie quickly pulled up the second grade class computer, running a check on its search engine. His hunch payed off, there was a program trigger failing to fire. It was a simple fix, and a few moments later his second system check came back negative. He proceeded to contact Mrs. Kowalski.
“Mrs. Kowalski I believe the problem is resolved.”
There was static on the line for a few seconds, then Mrs. Kowalski responded.
“Yes the computer is working again. Thank you.”
“Happy to help.” Jamie said, before exiting the conversation. He leaned back in his chair, just as another communication request popped up.
“It’s going to be a long day.”
