Personality: Jo has a relaxed and laid-back outlook on life which seems at odds with her career in Starfleet, however this mellow persona also gives her great patience and allows for far greater attention to detail than many of her contemporaries. Some Academy officers complained that she never seems to take anything seriously, approaching every situation, no matter the importance, with the same carefree attitude. However others have praised her for the same unflappable attitude during risky conditions and professionalism under fire.
Background and History: Raised on the Bajoran colony world of Prophet's Landing by her Ba'ku father Tournel and Bajoran mother Alenis Bennya, Jo's early life was disrupted when her father chose to return to his homeworld when he realised he was beginning to age at an alarming rate. Unable to relinquish the obligation she felt for her duties as head teacher in the local science academy Bennya elected to remain on Prophet's Landing with their daughter. The couple tried to maintain a long distance relationship but after a couple of years Bennya found herself falling in love with another man. After consultation with Tournel about the situation the two decided to break their relationship amicably rather than continue their arrangement.
Spending much of her early life alongside her mother and step-father at the science academy Jolarik soon developed a keen and inquisitive mind, and although she still practiced te rites and rituals of her parents' religion she held no true faith in the teachings of the Prophets, instead believing the more scientific explanation of the wormhole aliens' transtemporal nature.
In her early teens Jo decided to dedicate her life to studying the stars, and the best way to do that seemed to be by joining Starfleet. With high scholastic grades, and the endorsement of her mother, the young girl soon found herself on the path to the Academy, working on extra credit projects and assisting the local Federation representatives in order to enhance her entry petition. Unfortunately her first two attempts at the entrance examination proved to be failures, mainly due to her dedication to astronomy over other sciences and fields of study, but finally on her third try Jo managed to gain acceptance.
During the first year at the Academy Jo suffered not one but two personal tragedies when first her mother died and then only months later her step-father also, both from laboratory accidents which were deemed to be their own fault. Offered to defer the year's study in order to deal with the losses Jo chose instead to soldier on, finding solace in the comradeship of her fellow cadets, as well as comfort in the religion of her deceased parents. Jo applied for special dispensation to begin wearing her culturally significant earring as part of her standard uniform, as a mark of respect to her mother, and was granted permission from her instructors, with the provision that it not interfere with any equipment she may be called on to employ while on duty.
After graduating twelfth in her class Ensign Alenis applied for a position on Deep Space 9, looking for an opportunity to visit her mother's homeworld, as well as embracing her Bajoran heritage more fully than she had before. Unfortunately she was instead posted to a deep space subspace relay station to monitor comms traffic. While upset at first Jo spent most of her spare time using the stations instruments to monitor and record the local stellar phenomena, eventually publishing an academic paper on star formations and cosmic strings.
Along with the outstanding performance of her regular duties this extra level of commitment to the core ideals of Starfleet, to explore and discover, led Ensign Alenis to receive a promotion to Lieutenant junior grade after two years of service, and she quickly applied for reassignment to a starship in the hopes of gaining the opportunity to further her studies.
Sample Roleplay:
"Teakle juice. Chilled." Jo requested to the replicator as her eyes drifted across the deck to her workstation.
The comms traffic had been relatively light over the last couple of days, and she knew from experience that it would likely pick up again in a hurry at any moment. For a moment she wondered whether it would be worth calling Lt Galloway to help deal with the workload, but after a moment's consideration the young officer shook the thought away. Elisa had been on duty for the last few hours alone and deserved her rest.
As the cup of sweet berry juice coalesced on the output tray Jo reached in for it and began to take her first sip just as the terminal began to beep incessantly. Quickly hurrying over to the console, barely tasting the juice as she quickly swallowed it down, Lt Alenis pulled up the incoming message.
Wrinkling her brow in surprise the young Bajoran saw the message wasn’t tagged for urgent relay but instead was addressed to her personally. For a moment Jo was tempted to simply transfer the communique to her quarters to read it after her shift was over, but as she saw that it had been sent from Starfleet Command the Lieutenant flicked it open instead.
A moment later her hand was stabbing out towards the internal comm panel. "Lt Galloway, are you awake?"
"I am now," came the sluggish response a few moments later. "Have you any idea what time it is?" Elisa asked, her voice dripping with exhaustion through the comm channel.
"I think it's time for you to start organising my going away party," Jo replied with a broad grin threatening to let the top of her head fall off. "My new orders just came in and it looks like I'm off to..."
The next few days went by in a blur, with the comms channels picking up in volume as expected as well as the required security measures needing to be put in place for the handover with the new officer who’d be taking over the post once Jo had left for her new assignment. Finally she was getting to move somewhere new, hopefully somewhere with more interesting stars and sights to explore. After two years in the same post the scenery was beginning to feel a little stale and the chance to move to someplace new had Jo literally bouncing with every step she took.
“I’m gonna have to check the gravity plating. Looks like they may be set a little low.” Elisa said with a wry grin as her friend bobbed onto the deck for her final duty shift.
“No need to be like that,” Jo smirked back, before wrapping her arms around her friend’s shoulders. “I’m going to miss you El. I’m not sure what I’ll do without you.”
Lt Galloway chuckled to herself as she let the junior officer hug her. “I’m sure you’ll find someone to replace me the moment you arrive. That or they’ll tie you to a comm buoy and toss you out the nearest airlock.”
