Personality: Mia has a polite and precise manner when in public, but this belies a violent temper which she keeps in check through physical sports in her down time, including kickboxing, parrises squares and simply punching a sandbag in her quarters. Originally recruited to the Andorian military academy, Mia failed to qualify out of her first years training twice before transferring to Starfleet Academy, where her more inquisitive and creative spirit was more readily accepted.
Background and History: When she was first born many doctors believed that Mia, like so many others, would die due to genetic defects developed during her zhavey's pregnancy, and for the first five years of her life the young girl spent most of her time in one medical facility or another. All that changed in 2385 however, when a cure to her race's chromosonal problems was discovered by a team of Federation doctors led by Julian Bashir.
While the cure undoubtedly changed her life for the better, it also left Mia with an uncertain future. Before the cure she'd resigned herself to a short life under the care of physicians, but now she found herself with almost a century of expected life stretching out before her. Seizing the opportunity, the young girl began to study everything she could lay her hands on, from medical textbooks to technical manuals. By the time she was finally released from the care of her doctors for good, the six-year-old had already learnt how to dismantle practically every piece of equipment in the hospital, something which no doubt accelerated the plans to have her released into the custody of her zhavey.
As one of the first generation to be free of the reproductive crisis which had plagued her species for the last two and a half centuries, Mia was recruited by her government as part of the repopulation of her species. At first this programme simply meant entering into a highly prestigious education programme designed to condense her learning while living in the company of other children her own age. However, when the classmates reached sexual maturity their lessons took on a whole new aspect designed to her the group form cohesive bonding groups selected for maximum fertility.
In the beginning the treatment was fun for the young adults involved, but soon they began to tire of being treated as breeding stock, no matter how much the future of the Andorian race depended on them. Contacting the Federation Council the group petitioned to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any other Federation citizen, and soon the decision came down to cease the unfair treatment and allow the young adults to pursue their own lives, no matter the risks to their race.
With her freedom to choose gained Mia signed up with the Andorian Military Academy, planning to serve her people as part of the planetary militia. Such a role would allow her to do her part for her society, while at the same time keeping her close to home should her other services be required. The decision was welcomed by the Andorian parliament, who saw the choice as a wise compromise given the circumstances, but it soon became clear that the Andorian Academy wasn't the best fit for the young woman.
Although her accelerated education had provided her with the knowledge and skills she required for her studies, it had also failed to provide the basic physical training required for Andorian military personnel, and although she had managed to develop the stamina through her other activities she lack the physical strength and toughness to keep up with the other cadets, no matter how much they enjoyed her company in the barracks.
After failing her first year graduation examinations twice, the decision was made to not embarrass the poor woman any more and arrangements were made to transfer Mia to Starfleet Academy where her technical knowledge and skilful hands could be put to much better use. Signing on to the education stream Mia found her feet far more easily, and was soon making waves among her fellow cadets far more comfortably than she had with the militia.
Following her graduation Mia took assignments close to Andor, specialising in station systems and environmental engineering, in order to keep herself available for her government's ongoing requests for genetic samples. While the repopulation programme only led to a few more leaves of absence granted than was typical the activities did little to stall her Starfleet career and within a few years Mia found herself promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and with a new generation of Andorians reaching maturity she's ready to set out to the farther corners of the galaxy.
Sample Roleplay:
With a scream of rage Mia slammed her fist into the punching bag, sending the sand-filled sack bouncing on its stand. As it swung back she followed up her attack with another blow, before swinging round for a powerful kick which sent the whole training aid crashing back against the wall.
Panting for breath the Andorian bent over, her hands resting on her thighs as she gasped for air. Her antennae were tingling, her heart beating fast and knuckles sore inside her padded gloves but for the moment Mia felt her inner rage calming. It was good to vent occasionally, and the privacy of her quarters made sure none of the crew got hurt, unless they wanted to be.
Straightening up Mia reached for a towel resting over the back of the nearby chair and began to wipe the sweat from her face and chest as she made her way to the fresher. "Computer, time."
"The current ship time is 0752 hours. Your next duty shift is due to start in 1 hour and 18 minutes." The simulated voice answered promptly, responding to the preprogrammed command just as Mia had set it to.
With a smile Mia stepped through the door and headed for the sonic shower. There was plenty of time to enjoy a nice long soak under the hypersonic waves. Stripping out of her workout suit the Andorian stepped inside and waved her hand over the controls, activating the shower's strongest settings. After a few minutes Mia felt far better, with the dirt and sweat shaken from her blue skin, but settled in to enjoy the tingling touch of the sound waves buffeting her body.
By the time she stepped back out of the relaxing waves Mia felt like a new person, her inner calm and serenity prepared for the day to come. A wave of her hand towards the replicator had a uniform materialising in the output tray and the Lieutenant wasted no time getting dressed before moving back to the main room.
"Spice bread and citrus juice, chilled." She called over to the food replicator, while peering across to the bedside cabinet, trying to find her commbadge. "Where the hell did I leave that thing..?"
"Your commbadge is currently located in Ensign Kamala's quarters." The computer immediately responded. "Shall I deactivate the commbadge and replicate a replacement?"
If Mia didn't know better she'd swear the computer's tone was more chiding than usual, but ignoring the snark she smiled over at the console, not letting it disturb her new chill. "Yes, please."
With a glow of light a small tray fizzled into existence, complete with the dark brown bread, a glass of juice and the replacement pin. Taking the plate with one hand the Lieutenant used her other to attach the badge in place on her tunic before taking a bite from her spice bread.
It was almost time for work, Mia quickly leaned down to fish her PADD from under the bed before finishing off her fruit juice and placing the glass and plate back in the replicator on the way to the door.
