(Character concept has admin approval)
Character's Name: Ania Tekere
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Race: Betazoid (NEARLY telepathically deaf)
Date of birth: Jan 15, 2377
Year of Academy Graduation: 2399
Physical Profile (height, weight, hair color, eye color, etc.): 5'3", 110 lbs. By most standards, Ania is an attractive woman. She has angular, aristocratic features, and sepia-toned skin, which all contribute to an exotic beauty. She has a curvy figure, and she walks in a manner that suggests a past as a dancer. She speaks with the typical lilt of many Betazoid women. If seen on Betazed, though, she is a paragon. Very few men look her way, and they do so with pity.
Birthplace: Medara, Betazed
Talon or moonbase? Talon
Preferred rank: Lieutenant
Department (if moonbase, why are they there?): Counselor/First Contact Specialist

Personality: Initially, Ania prefers to stay in the background as a wallflower and gauge the feel of a room. As she warms up to people, she becomes sweet and kind. Deep inside she's still insecure from years of being viewed as a lesser class. She is timid among her own people, and tends to avoid any association with them. She tends to be drawn to the underdogs of society, and will be the first one to offer aid if there's a wounded animal or a homeless orphan running about. She appreciates the small things in life, like flowers and birds, and could spend hours just drawing pictures of a waterfall. She does her best to distract herself from the bad things she sees and hears in her line of work, but deep down inside there is a part of her that is lonely, and wants to be the comforted instead of the comforter.
Background and History: The Tekere family is a relatively unknown one on Betazed. In a class of families with little to no telepathic ability, they largely kept to themselves, and were not overly involved in Betazoid society. Throughout her childhood, Ania went through many different classes and therapies to attempt to increase her telepathic potential as much as possible, but she was still extremely lacking in proficiency. It is limited to other telepaths, and only with limitations. She cannot typically “hear” anything from another telepath unless they are openly projecting, though she can project thoughts somewhat consistently. Her abilities increase somewhat with individuals she knows well, but that is a trait that develops extremely slowly. Thus far her only real evidence of this is her ability to communicate with her close family. Her level of impairment means that she integrates rather poorly with her own kind, save the members of the small telepathically-deaf community she grew up in.
She took the opportunity to leave Betazed as soon as it became available to her, joining Starfleet in an act of escape. After all, most Federation species weren’t telepathic, so she assumed she wouldn’t be judged as harshly. She reached a dilemma when she was going through her initial aptitude testing, however; she had far more talent in counseling skills than she did in anything. At first she was reticent to follow this path, which was stereotypical of the stronger telepathic and empathic Betazoids. But then it became a challenge: to prove to others that she was just as capable as a counselor without those gifts.
Her time in the Academy was relatively uneventful. By and large she kept to her small social circle, and studied as hard as she could to pursue her goals. She did not choose to graduate early, though she quite possibly could have, as she wanted to take as many classes as possible. After her official graduation, she requested to be considered for an extended learning program at Starfleet Medical that would give her even more tools for her counseling arsenal. Her professors realized that one of her strengths was handling various aliens in a manner that ensured that they ere not offended, and they helped her to get into classes oriented towards First Contact.
Her first duty assignment was aboard the Galaxy-class USS Tesla. It was a unique experience for Ania because she was dealing with many civilians and adolescents. She realized that it was a gap in her skill set, and she worked hard to adjust her mindset towards patients other than Starfleet officers.
While the Tesla was undergoing a refit, she took additional classes on First Contact, and also focused on how to aid those with PTSD. When the refit was finished, she returned to the Tesla with a new passion and a shinier collar. With the promotion to Lieutenant JG, she was finally able to go on more away team missions, and contribute more to the ship as a whole. By now she was 26 and had been on the Tesla for 2 years; more than long enough for her to make friends and open up.
As soon as she’d reached that point, she was transferred to Deep Space 4. The station was a completely different experience. Rather than meeting a bunch of new cultures, it was a stagnant group of the same general people with the same general problems. She did her duty, but it made her antsy, and when she was offered the opportunity to serve aboard the Sovereign-class USS Premiere.
It was at this posting that she really got to hone her skills in handling First Contact scenarios. It was work that she genuinely loved, even if the Beta quadrant wasn’t the most fascinating place in the galaxy. This job would prove to be her toughest, as a First Contact experience gone bad resulted in the death of the Premiere’s First Officer. Though Ania was cleared of all responsibility in the matter, there were those who still attributed fault to her.
In an attempt to give her a clean slate, Starfleet Command assigned her to the USS Talon, in hopes that she would be a helping influence in dealing with the wide variety of new species the Gamma quadrant has to offer.
But sometimes… rumors travel faster than subspace.

Sample Roleplay:
"Hello, Crewman Powell," Ania said, inviting the nervous-looking human into her office. "You can have a seat anywhere, and relax. I'm here to help you. Can I get you anything?"
"Um... water," the older man said, taking a seat in one of the plush chairs nearby. He wiped sweaty hands on dirty uniform trousers before running them through greasy hair. He was a mess, and Ania was extremely concerned. Retrieving the beverage, she took a seat at a nearby couch: close enough to look like she cared, but not enough to crowd.
"What would you like to talk about today?" she queried, handing over the glass of water. Picking up her own tea, she sipped at it slowly while she waited for the Crewman to open up.
"Don't you already know?" he said, snorting derisively. "I don't even know why I came..."
"I'm not a telepath," Ania explained, for what was likely the 275th time this week. There were certain tropes that Betazoid counselors were supposed to fit, after all. "My people have a word for it. I suppose the translation would be teledeaf."
Powell scruitized her, wondering if it was a lie or not. Filthy mind reading liars. "My wife left me."
Ania nodded, "I saw that she'd moved some of her things..."
"Moved them to the First Officer's quarters!" Powell said, indignant.
By the Sacred Chalice, it's going to be a long day...
