Personality: Contessa is a work in progress, a butterfly still in her cocoon- split between who she was and who she is becoming, trying to balance what she is losing and what she is gaining. She is a little unsure of herself when it comes to her new skills but earning more confidence every day, the rough edges she always disliked about herself wearing away, softening as she matures. While mostly calm, Contessa can sometimes give into her own frustration which can make her either very snappy or quite morose. She has several hobbies including, but not limited to, enjoying scary holonovels, going out with friends, dancing, popular music, dating, fashion, and most recently adding studying, and team track sports.
Background and History: Contessa’s childhood was a series of big, unexpected and unwelcomed changes. Her mother (Davina Burke) was a homemaker and artist and her father (Timothy Burke) was a Starfleet pilot. Despite her dad being gone for weeks or even months at a time things were happy and good until one day, when she was nine, her parents divorced. Her father had confessed to a short affair and even though he was sorry, willing to do anything to reconcile, her mother was never able to forgive him and wanted nothing to do with him, or Starfleet, again. Eventually Tim remarried and when Contessa was 15 Davina did as well.
After her father was forced out of the picture, Contessa’s raising lacked discipline and structure. She had a mother who gave her anything she wanted, a father too ashamed to send any sort of communications except for birthdays and holidays, and eventually a stepfather (Arnold Dez) who was incredibly strict and not as easily manipulated as her mother.
Daily life was dull and tiring, Contessa craved something more, she wanted to shed this life and start anew. She had become determined to become a strong woman, something she could be proud of, someone who would impact the world in a positive way. She was a recruiter’s dream.
Initially her mother rejected the idea of Contessa going to Starfleet Academy but it wasn’t hard to guilt her into accepting the idea; like everything else she had to give her daughter what she wanted.
Contessa’s first year at the Academy was an exhausting change of pace and her command structure did well to squash her selfish behavior and instill a new mindset of teamwork, professionalism, and commitment. She had survived the growing pains and had begun to form meaningful friendships and learned the importance of discipline. For the first time in her life she felt good about her future.

Sample Roleplay: “It’s not fair,” Contessa complained, willing that her eyes would quit watering. She knew what the Lieutenant commander was going to respond with as soon as she said it.
“Not everything in this life is going to be fair Burke,” the professor said grimly, only allowing a sliver of sympathy to show through. “There is more to being an officer than knowing the answers to questions. You have to be better, you have to lead people- not tear them into pieces.” The younger woman stood there quietly, the expression on her face remaining unchanged so the teacher took the chance to teach. “How would you like it if I stood here and berated you for your mistake like you did to Cadet Qall?”
A quiet sigh left Contessa’s full lips. “I would hate it and it would make me angry, Commander Brookes.” There was a time when she wouldn’t have answered, or denied any feelings about it at all.
There was a heavy moment of silence as the lesson sunk in.
“What do I do now,” Contessa wondered out loud, seeking guidance. She could never count on her mother to give honest advice but the instructors had proven to be tough, caring, and most importantly honest. It had been a rude awakening leaving her comfort zone but stepping out of the echo chamber that had been her life had been one of the most liberating things she'd ever done.
The Commander relaxed visibly, leaning back in her chair. “It’s easier if you didn’t lose your temper,” Contessa squirmed in her place unable to argue with such a perfect point, “but you might start with an apology.”
Surely that was too easy of a solution. “What if he doesn’t accept?” She sounded a little more argumentative than she had intended so she took a step back. Apologizing had never been in Contessa’s repertoire, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d done it sincerely but if she was going to make things right- something she wanted to do very much because the old her wouldn't have cared- then now was a good time to start. It would leave her vulnerable, no doubt, and she didn’t know what to expect but she had to do something.
“He might not. Every choice you make, or don’t make, has its consequences. You’ve been here a few months already, I expect better out of you, Cadet. Dismissed.”
