Physical Profile (height, weight, hair color, eye color, etc.): Kimiko is a rather small woman, standing 5’2”, and weighing 105 pounds. Her skintone is fawn, and her hair and eyes are black. Her build is slight but athletic, and she has enough curve to her frame to appear distinctly feminine. Her eyebrows arch above large, inquisitive eyes and wide, defined cheekbones. When she wears makeup, she limits it to a bit of eyeliner and lip gloss. She has a peculiar fascination with glasses despite having perfect vision, and on occasion wears non-prescription glasses with a dark frame.
Personality: Above all else, Kimi is clever, industrious, and curious. She’s extremely outgoing, but a bit socially awkward. As a child she had more books and toys than friends, and as an adult she’s prone to behaviors that others might consider eccentric. She enjoys naming and talking to inanimate objects. She collects Victorian-era dolls and WWII models, which occasionally make their way to her engineering terminal. One of her hobbies is inventing words, and it doesn’t always occur to her that others might not be familiar with her unique contributions to the English language.
Despite that, she is generally likeable, as she is a good listener and a great friend. She truly cares about the people around her (and the warp core), and she strives to learn about everyone. Some people may find her desire to befriend the entire ship a bit off putting, but Kimi has a certain innocence and lack of guile that makes her non-threatening. Because of this, her family nicknamed her “Shika,” meaning deer, a name which also hearkens to her doe-eyed appearance. It is not uncommon for her to sneeze* when she gets nervous, a weird tick that several have tried to curb, but with limited success. When she gets bored, she often composes little random ditties in her head… which may occasionally end up being uttered aloud.
Background and History: Born the daughter of two Starfleet Academy professors, Kimi’s destiny seemed to be written from day one. Her parents researched a variety of educational training methods to ensure that Kimi got the best early education possible, but in doing so eschewed some common necessities such as “friends” and “emotional bonds.” Despite this, Kimi grew up rather well, though this was the beginning of her trend towards talking to inanimate objects. As a young girl she was rather sickly, which contributed to their decision to restrict Kimi’s access to peers. Though she was eventually cured of the immune ailment that she possessed in her teenage years, she learned early on that if she started sneezing, her parents would remove her from a situation. This behavior has carried on to adulthood as a minor tic; in situations outside of Kimi’s comfort zone, she will often sneeze reflexively. Fortunately they are rather small, quiet sneezes, and most people find them more humorous than annoying.
Due to her restrictive childhood, Kimi failed the initial psych screening for Starfleet Academy. She was advised that with regular meetings with a counselor, and with lifestyle changes such as living on her own that she could apply again for the next calendar year. Her parents were extremely disappointed in Kimi, blaming her more than they did the upbringing they provided her with.
Her time at the Academy was quite simply put mediocre, to the general dismay of her parents. Though she performed admirably in simulations and on projects, classroom learning was a new experience for her, and one she didn’t excel at until her final year. It was then that she developed her social skills more strongly, and learned the value of having people in her life. From that point on she resolved to make as many friends as she could to make up for lost time. She graduated in the upper-middle part of her class and was assigned to a small science vessel as an Engineer.
Kimi found herself a lot more suited to a ship-based environment and lifestyle, and she gradually proved herself to her superiors over the course of a few years. She became more confident in her abilities, and learned how to better work with her peers. During the war she was really able to show her worth, which resulted in Starfleet Command deciding to assign her to the USS Talon as a Warp Core Engineer. Kimi is excited to learn all about everyone on her new vessel, and to continue proving that she’s not merely mediocre.

Kimi was bored at her terminal, and boredness had a solid knack of leading to brain wanderlust. While she watched figures trickle down her display screen like ants on parade, she began to hum an old Earth song to herself: The Battle Hymn of the Republic. When none of her coworkers protested the gesture, she began injecting warp mechanics into the song, replacing it’s typical lyrics with something more engineer friendly.
“Dilithium crystals sit inside articulation frames,
And all is wrapped in force fields so we don’t go up in flames,
Matter and anti-matter streams; you better check your aim,
Or else the ship goes boooooom!
Glory, glory warp reactors,
Glory, glory warp reactors,
Glory, glory warp reactors,
We hope we don’t go boom!”
Sure, some of the lyrics had to be rushed to fit the theme, but damnit, she was an Engineer, not a songwriter! Noticing eyes on her, she looked around, gave a wry grin, and then a small, delicate *achoo*!
*As Kimi feels confident in her ability to perform her duties, her sneezing isn’t something that would impact that. Rather, it’s most likely to occur when she feels uncomfortable in a social interaction.
