She couldn't believe how much time had passed. Grace had expected her visit to Sickbay to last nothing more than a few moments, but it had lasted much longer than that. By the time she had arrived in Sickbay, the Horisi pollen had really done a number on Grace. She was beginning to wonder if it had reacted badly to one of the antihistamines she had taken earlier. It had left Nurse Habot with trying an old Denobulan remedy. The side effect being that it had an unfortunate side effect: drowsiness.
By the time, Grace came to, it had been over an hour. The symptoms had subisded, but she knew that she was late. She could recall asking the computer before where Kealan had been. Before she fell asleep, he had been in his quarters, though by the time she woke and started to rush out of Sickbay, the computer informed her that he was on the Bridge. She debated taking another visit to the Bridge, but found herself dissuaded in case he had been summoned their because of something that demanded his immediate attention.
Not wishing to be a distraction, Grace decided to venture to her quarters. Once there, she had barely began to settle inside when she heard the door chime. There had been quite a bit of pep in her step as she moved towards the door, anticipating finding Kealan on the other side. Yet, instead, she found an ensign. The officer delivered the items... gifts... and then turned to be on her way.
Grace examined each of them, and yet, she couldn't bring herself to open them... at least not yet. Somehow, it didn't feel right to do so without Kealan there. Nothing seemed to be going as she would have liked today. Had she gotten out of bed on the wrong side that morning? Taking a deep breath, Grace opted for a distraction. She hadn't wanted anyone to make too much of a fuss out of her birthday, and yet... she couldn't help but feel a tad disappointed that her plans with Kealan had fallen through.
"Computer, is Captain Monroe still on the Bridge?" she asked.
"Negative," came the computer's reply.
"Has he returned to his quarters?" Grace followed up.
"Captain Monroe is not in his quarters."
There was a slight droop as she stood there. "Does the captain's current trajectory suggest he is heading in this direction?" Grace asked.
"Negative."
A long sigh left Grace's lips. It would be so easy to just ask the computer where his whereabouts currently were, but she wasn't sure if she wanted to know the answer. Grace's eyes fell upon the container that held mooncake inside. She didn't even feel like having a piece... at least not in that moment.
Grace stepped out of her quarters, and eventually found herself outside of the holodeck. Stepping inside, Grace moved towards the arch. Even as she had wondered into the room, she still hadn't decided upon a suitable distraction. Taking a deep breath, her eyes scanned some of the recent programs to see if anything of interest stood out. And then, a thought came to her. What did she really know about Kealan? When had they ever managed to just sit and talk... and learn about one another?
"Computer... show me the Pacific Northwest," Grace began.
"There are over 4,189 different simulations of that region, each with over 67 customizable variat--" stated the computer.
Grace interrupted. "Computer, choose randomly and begin program." Grace watched as the familiar grid was replaced with the sight of a waterfall. From what she could recall, this was the region that Kealan had come from... or at least where he had been born. Her eyes gazed upon the area around her. She couldn't help but wonder if he had been to this very place? It was beautiful. It was big... wet... lush... and a tad chilly.
Grace's arms wrapped around herself. She knew that she could ask the computer to alter the climate, but that wasn't necessarily a choice Kealan would have had if he'd been at this place on Earth. She took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh air... and hearing the rush of the water as it cascaded over the rocks behind it. Below, her eyes fell upon a pair of beavers, racing across a fallen tree. Her feet finally began to move forward as she explored what seemed like an endless forest all around her.
