He looked at her hand as if it was something foreign to him, but she knew outward appearances were nowhere even close to the truth. He was terrified. She was presenting before him the ultimate symbol of trust, a gesture steeped in tradition throughout humanity, only recently brought to Etimon, one that meant even more to her people because of what their hands could do.
His hesitation was alarming. If they were to work together, to have the back of the other on away missions, they had to have trust.
"Take it..." His hands closed tight against her repeated suggestion. "Nevir," she said quietly, the first time she had ever used the name. It had the intended effect, causing him to look at her. He searched her eyes, and she could almost feel the turmoil in his mind.
"I really have been the biggest idiot on this ship..."
"Yes," she said softly. Finally, he took her hand, the contact causing her mouth to open ever so slightly with the memories she wanted to forget.
"No more... no more running. I'm with Loch on this one. No one, not even an Admiral, has the right to use you."
Loch's silence was more piercing than any words from the counselor could ever be and she tried not to think about what he was going to say later after he dissected their actions in his mind. Instead, she concentrated on the man before her, the lynchpin in all that had happened. His name was known not just to this one Etimonian, but to her entire people. His very existence caused fire after fire, a history of actions and retreat, over and over again. It had to stop.
"His very presence scared me away from you last time... but this time... this time there is nothing left he can take away from me. You aren't alone."
She softened her grip slightly and tilted her head. "What are you saying?"
