All appointments had been cancelled, not that the clients expected her to receive them, not after yesterday's events. Ruth stood in the quarters she had shared with Frank Williams and stared down at the brilliant stone on the 4th finger of her left hand. The promise had never been completed and now it never would. Only she, his family, and hers, even knew about the engagement, it had only happened forty-eight hours ago.
It had been a miracle in the first place. She was not an easy person to love, she knew that, yet Frank had seen past it all and found the woman beneath her outward persona. She knew it would not happen again. At her age, with her outspoken behavior, lightning would not strike twice.
She sat down weakly into his favorite chair and leaned back, turning her head to the side so that she could detect his cologne in the leather. Tears welled up in her eyes again, though she thought she had exhausted the supply, and she sat upright, pulling herself to the edge once again, away from the scent.
Standing, she walked aimlessly around the dead man's quarters, touching objects as she went and placing several items into her floral handbag. In the bedroom, she touched the one drawer he had placed off limits to her. Until now. The switch activated and the drawer slid open, exposing the contents. She expected to see it full of memories, but there was only one item, a small silver box.
With a trembling hand, she picked it up, opening the lid. Inside was a band of gold, the one that would complete the promise, and she dropped down to her knees, holding onto the drawer to steady herself. When she could finally do so, she let go and gently took the ring from the box. Tilting it, she read the inscription inside.
Eternity is not enough.
Sobs contorted her body until she was jackknifed on the floor, her forehead on the cool surface.
"I miss you so much," she cried out into the empty room.
