"I wouldn't know. We don't talk much. I prefer not to socialise with my department chief."
There wasn't a single thing about Contessa that had ever gave her pause to wonder if maybe, just maybe, she should switch to the security track. The fact that an ensign didn't care if her commander was dying was too asocial for the girl's personality. To be surrounded by people who didn't want to chat? It would have been like being in hell. Chatting is what kept her sanity intact.
Surely a security officer couldn't really ignore their leader to such an extent, right? Contessa tried to press a little further, to get Athena to dig a little deeper, think a little more critically.
"The only way for you to know would be to ask him yourself."
"Clearly."
She would do, of course. He'd been so broken and drowning in his own feelings that someone had to check up on him. Of course, S'rah would have been an awful choice because of her shyness and being the center of the awkward affections from the old commander. Really, there wasn't anyone better than her to do it. Using her charm and wit she wagered she could crack him with very little effort.
After mentally adjusting her agenda, Contessa piped up with one more thing to say. Mostly she was just curious about the response more than anything.
"Since you prefer not to socialise with your commander you likely don't with cadets either so I'll just let you know that Cadet Nivans is okay after getting hurt. He's made a great recovery, really. His sister works in your department, too, as a J.G.," she mistakenly informed, unaware of the promotion that had taken place earlier that morning. "You reckon that might make things awkward for the two of you in the next few weeks? Supposedly she's fairly nice, of course, I haven't properly met her but people say nice things."
