As Kary entered her quarters, she looked around them with a sigh. They were so bare, drab and so unlike who she was inside. She hadn't even had a moment yet to unpack her things.
Sinking down onto the sofa that had been provided for her quarters, she leaned her head back and closed her eyes. This had not been the best of days, and to boot it was her first day among a ship full of strangers. Strangers....that's what they all were to her. A part of her missed the crew she had left behind. They had gotten to know one other. She had reached a comfortable stage with so many of them. Now, she would need to begin anew.
As she sat, eyes closed, resting her head against the back of the sofa, she thought back on her day so far, from her arrival only to find herself thrust into a situation with a new species. A girl, whom Kary had found herself drawn to, wanting to protect. It was a mothering instinct she had not often felt, yet there, out of the blue, it had arisen. Yet, she had befriended young Ahska, only to learn that duty would force her to nearly break the girl's heart. Kary's heart ached alongside the Etimonians. Already, Ahska was gone from the ship. Kary had checked upon her return. She willed that the Prophets and any gods the Etimonians may have would look kindly down upon the young girl.
Not only had she been faced with that heart-wrenching discussion, but now she also had to coordinate the funeral arrangements for one of their crew. One she had only briefly met, and all because the away mission she had been sent to save had failed. To boot, Kary had found herself bumbling along like a fool after her head injury.
It was little wonder that she had found her confidence and normal demeanor smashed in but a few short hours.
Opening her eyes, however, she resolved to remedy the situation. Nothing could change the past, but she could surely find joy in the present.
Moving into her bedroom, she quickly shed her uniform, showered, and began preparations to make herself feel so much more glamorous that the Starfleet issued uniforms could ever allow. As she primped and prepared, Kary couldn't help but feel her spirits begin to lift. While she may be hard-nosed and cold at times, Kary was nothing if not a woman who loved the chance to embrace her feminine side.
Finally, dressed and ready, Kary looked in the mirror and her face beamed. Now, that was a woman of confidence, and one to turn a few heads as well. Nothing could make her feel better than to know that she, herself, was shining as a little star amongst a galaxy of others. Kary vowed to enjoy the moment. And what better place to rekindle her spirit than here on DS9, only a short distance away from the homeworld she loved and adored.
"Well, beautiful," she smilingly told herself, "let's go see what all the 'boys' think of me now!" Kary would enjoy this, that was for sure!
End Kary
