Her entire body ached. Because she had stood for almost an hour her thighs down to her calves felt like lead, her lower back burned from leaning over to evaluate Hunter and now her head was throbbing from spending hours in the lab without eating. To say the least she was in a horrible state when she arrived in her quarters, yet she did not complain because it had all been worth it. William was slowly recovering from this mess and soon so would the others. She would not take complete credit for the discovery because William's work had sparked the initial light bulb, but she was proud of her own accomplishments today. It had been stressful, yet she had worked her way through it...
At the end of the day she had saved a life. How awesome was that?
Ava stepped into her quarters to find it just as she had left it. Her clothing was strewn everywhere. Empty pop containers littered the sitting room table and she could just hear the buzz of her computer console from across the room. Of course she had forgotten to shut it off before she had darted off to the labs. She always did.
Stretching her arms over head, she released an exhausted yawn. Raking her fingertips through her hair she made her way to her bedroom where she began to undress for a well needed shower.
She wasted no time inside. Fifteen minutes later she clambered out, draping a towel around her body as she slipped out of the bath into her bedroom. Plopping down on the bed, she flopped back onto her back, letting her drenched hair soak the sheets. That she was making a larger mess for herself did not cross her mind. She was back in sickbay.
Hunter was gazing up into her eyes with an almost pleading look in his eyes. Something in those round orbs of his had been trying to tell her something; something that he would never be able to communicate with words. As she lay there, Ava raised her hands up toward the ceiling and moved her fingers as if seeing them for the first time. She could feel his rough, calloused finger weave their way between hers, feel the urgency in his grip and slinkness of his pale skin as he told her to sedate him, even against his own better judgement. Never before had she witnessed a man as visibly worn as Hunter had been, give himself over to his job, to science. He had risked everything for this. And he had trusted her to do what was right. Her; a woman he barely knew, who had started off on the wrong foot in his eyes. She had made his life a miserable hell and yet he had placed his life in her hands.
What did it all mean?
Ava's dropped her arms back down onto the bed and closed her eyes. She wanted to remember every second of it. Their misunderstanding, the moments of indecision and confusion, of determination and resolution. Hunter had ridden this rollercoaster with her. They alone could describe those forty odd minutes of uncertainty. It had been a part of the job, yet she liked to believe that it had been much more to them both.
"Gah, I've got to stop this," she said to herself as she sat up on elbows and gazed around her room. It was then that her stomach began to rumble. She was starving for something to eat.
"Chicken soup!" The words echoed in her mind in Hunter's voice. A second passed and then...she laughed aloud. William was truly unique. When all else fails, eat!
Shaking her head, Ava rose from the bed and made her way to the closet. She slipped on something a bit more casual which wouldn't look too out of place were she to be called back to sickbay sooner rather than later. A pair of dark denim jeans and a tee would do. She quickly dried her hair and pulled it up high so that her curls cascaded down.
Stopping by the replicator to grab a granola bar, she walked over to her computer console and brought up a list of various chicken noodle soups. One of these would certainly please a very hungry biologist when he finally awakened. She had only to find the right one.
After searching through various recipes she input the information into her PADD. It was off to the mess hall where she hoped someone could whip up a fresh, home made soup
End Ava
