Millie’s eyes fluttered open. She laid there staring up at absolutely nothing for what felt like a few minutes until she mustered the necessary motivation to sit, stretch and look about the room. She must have dosed off while Luca was there. Still dressed in nothing but her underwear complete with bloody smear across her abdomen, she was sitting on her couch with a blanket draped over her. Alone.
Her eyes caught a glimpse of the blinking light on her console indicating that she had a message waiting to be retrieved. Standing, she wrapped the blanket around her like a toga and moved over to the desk, pulling out the chair and climbing into it in a little heap with her legs tucked up under her. Once she was comfortable she activated the message.
Dorian’s handsome face appeared on the screen. The window behind him showing a portion of DS9. “Hello Little” Millie could not help but crack a small smile at hearing him use that term of endearment. She had always thought it was silly that he had insisted on calling her that. Their differences in height were quite apparent. But it had never been a hindrance. In fact…
She snapped out of her lascivious train of thought and focused back on the console. “First and foremost, I want to congratulate you on your posting. Nice job! Service on a starship at last.” She could see from the look on his face, that he was genuinely happy for her. “It is a great career move and I’m proud of you.” He looked down a moment and then back at the pickup. “Hey, you’re a great doctor and I’m sure you’ll move up fast. Anyway…”
“As I guess you can see, we’re back at DS9 again” he swiveled in his chair to wave at the view. “…and the stay has been a bit extended waiting on Starfleet to give us our next assignment. I looked for you when we got here. Sorry that I missed you and didn’t get to congratulate you in person.” It was in that moment that she got choked up. Her eyes swelled with tears as she imagined what it must have been like for him to go to her quarters and find that she was gone. Millie hadn’t wanted to hurt Dorian. In fact, she had wanted them to be together. Really together. But she could never bring herself to ask him directly and he never could quite seem to catch her hints. So she tried the ‘ultimatum’ tactic… and here they were. God, she really was inept when it came to her personal life.
“I hope you’re well and enjoying the new job.” Then he laughed “don’t kill anyone!” Her eyes widened. She had killed someone…granted she brought him back, but she had managed on her very first day aboard this ship and with her very first patient to kill someone. Luca. Where was Luca?
“Alexander out” and he reached forward to hit the disconnect.
Millie sat in shock staring at the blank screen, her mind reeling with the massive amount of information that flooded her cerebral cortex. She could not possibly process all of this right now. Standing, she adjusted her blanket toga and walked over to her cello in a semi catatonic state. Opening the case, she pulled her cherished instrument free from its velvet lined resting place and moved to take a seat, placing it on the floor between her knees and leaning it back against her chest. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and exhaled slowly before playing those first few haunting notes of Johan Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite Number 1 Prelude in G Major. As she played she let the music surround her, filling all of her senses and uncluttering her mind. The music began to take on a life of its own. Washing over her and restoring that still calm voice of reason she so desperately needed in this moment. By the time the final note reverberated through the air she was ready to face the reality of her current situation and do the things that needed to be done.
Smiling at her renewed self-assurance, Millie set her cello aside and went to take a shower. As she washed she composed her response to Dorian in her head. Going over the monologue and refining it until she was satisfied with the results. She dressed in a black tank top and pair of plain grey cotton pants and then marched back out into the sitting room. Getting herself situated on the floor in front of her cello where it sat in its stand, she set the communication device in front of her and started her recording.
“Heg min Gullbit,” she said with a sweet smile. “Thank you very much for your message. I apologize for not responding sooner…” she looked down and brushed her hair behind her ear. “Things have been…”she paused as she decided on the right word and then looked up at the camera with an awkward smile, “hectic. I wish I could say that I took your advice. But sadly, I’ve not been the best doctor I could be. A miscalculation I made nearly cost a man his life. Fortunately, I was able to correct things before it was too late.” Taking a deep breath she continued, “Then on my very first away mission I somehow managed to tick off a mass-murder and ended being injured and taken hostage. Thankfully our Security Chief got to me in time and…” she shrugged her should a bit, “well, judging by the fact that I saw you walking toward me in the hall as I passed out, I’m sure you already know all about that little incident. Needless to say, I haven’t exactly gotten off to the best start. But you know me. I may not always take the easy route, but somehow I find my way.”
Millie paused and looked off camera as she gathered her thoughts, then looking back into the lens with a look of genuine appreciation she said, “Thank you, Dorian. There are many things I should thank you for, but that would be better done in person I think. In the meantime - thank you for coming to see me and for staying by my side until I was awake.” Her brow furrowed as she composed her next thought, the look of regret very evident on her face. “In spite of what you may think, I was very happy to see you. Surprised. But happy.” Taking a breath she gave the camera a little sideways glare. “Given our recent history and the awkwardness of the moment, I’ll give you a pass this time, but I have to say that I was very disappointed that you didn’t share your amazing news with me.” She narrowed her eyes at the camera and then turned on her charming smile and very brightly exclaimed. “Congratulations Captain!” Clasping her hands to her chest, she leaned forward and said, “I know how much you have always wanted this and I could not be more happy for you. You deserve this, Gullbit. I know you will do an amazing job.”
“I’ve gone on too long, so I’ll close by saying: Du är bäst!” Smiling she leans in to end the transmission but pauses and says softly, “Jag älskar dig.”
