"I am sorry, I wanted to see Gillian and Dacola... it was the only way my keeper would let me go near this place."
He smiled at her and wondered how much longer it would be before she lost such innocence. Tiria obviously was in on it and he laughed when she said it had seemed like a good idea at the time. "Next time, just ask," he said. As a steward arrived with the tray, Sig snagged a sandwich off of it and ate it quickly and finished off his cup of broth. "Thank you," he said to Tiria, then waved the remaining piece of sandwich at the room, "from all of us."
"I have an apology to make," he said when he had finished his meal, "but first I have to write a report." He made his way to where Hannah had been taken and sat with her for a few minutes, writing the official death report and signing off on it. He knew he would have to say a few words at her memorial, but he closed his eyes and said a few as his heart sent her soul on its way.
Standing, he walked over to where Adrian was working through a mess of small equipment. "Doctor," he said, "I wish we had met over better circumstances and I have acted poorly. I apologize for snapping at you earlier and I thank you for picking up my slack." He ran a hand through his sandy colored hair, "you're not catching me at my best." He knew he didn't need to explain, and that the man from another ship didn't need to hear his story, but he felt compelled nonetheless. He told Adrian about Hannah, how they had been engaged, about the shuttle accident that gave her amnesia and how she had finally remembered him the moment before her death. "It doesn't excuse my actions," he said, "grief shouldn't control me while I'm at my job." He sighed, then gave Adrian a soft smile, and laughed, "it's nice to meet you."
