"Sorry to disagree with you, Sir," he said. "But most people do things like that only to satisfy their own selfish needs. I'll scratch your back, knowing it'll get me something in the future. It's human nature. We're all self-absorbed asses."
He raised an eyebrow at Hunter. Speak for yourself.
"If you're determined to be pessimistic about it, let me put it this way then," he said. "No-one ever goes out of their way to do things for people who piss them the hell off, even if they are looking to get ahead." Not unless they were really damn determined.
"Ever had bad milk," he asked. "You get it and it's pure and delicious and wholesome. Then, after a while, it changes. It gets sour...tastes bad, and starts to smell."
He shook his head, a little sadly.
"That's a very sorry metaphor for a relationship," he said. "All milk goes off, that's just inevitable. Is that how you see relationships? That they all have an expiration date?" Personally, Tim knew he was always hoping that the next relationship wouldn't have to have an ending. Wasn't that what it was all about - the eternal search for the relationship that didn't expire?
"I think they're more like fires," he said, instead. "You can feed them and they burn brighter, or you can douse them and put them out. Or you can neglect them and they'll burn lower and start to die... but there's nothing to stop you paying some attention to it again and making it burn hot and strong again." It wasn't a perfect analogy by any means, but it was certainly a more attractive one than spoilt milk.
He looked up, realising Quin had returned.
"Everything go ok?" he asked him.
