"Where'd you get that," said the Commander as he came back into their camp. "Not that I'm complaining,"
She pointed to the retreating small pinkish alien who’d backed away when Tyne approached. They hadn’t exactly spoken but they had communicated. She imagined the chattering of the other one had been attempts to communicate and she realized they’d have to make an effort at trying to understand one another. Not her area of expertise or talent, which she knew from her grades at the academy.
"We should probably boil it before we use it."
He’d found some flat rocks to arrange over part of the fire so they could cook. Then he set his bowl of water on it to heat it up. She looked around for something to use for makeshift tongs, then she could use some small rocks and heat them in the fire then drop them into the water to help the process along. She scooped a few small stones into the fire to heat up.
Several chattering aliens came toward them from the forest to partake of their fire, just as she found some green twigs to bend and shape into a serviceable rock scoop. She backed away and wove the twigs loosely together before bending them back in an arc and lashing the tip back to the handle with some long grass. It looked rather like a spoon without a bowl and would probably work several times before it was burnt to badly to be reused.
"Guess not all of them know how to use the flint."
She chuckled as one of the aliens returned to hand her some sort of native rope. That could simplify some of what they needed to do here.
"We could have worse neighbors,"
“Yes,” she said with a brave smile. “They share a little of everything it seems.”
"I hope you like jerky, Lieutenant."
She nodded as he tested the food. It made her hopeful in a way, or as much as she could be given the situation. There was still that jabbering voice in the back of her mind that she could only keep quiet by just doing something. When she’d been on her survival trip, there was no voice back there because deep down she knew it was an exercise and she’d come out unscathed at the end of the week. This was completely different.
He went to work on the shelter and she put a hot rock from the fire into the bowl of water to help the heating along. Then she got a few of the bows and vines to weave together into pallet for Otis and laid it on the ground next to him. By the time she was done, the shelter was mostly built.
“The water’s boiling,” she announced.
