“Time to get up lazybones.”
Tyne groaned grumpily and rolled over with his forearm over his eyes. Knowing there was no way he could fight her will, he sighed heavily and pushed himself up, then clambered off of the pile of hides. Yesterday, he had hung them in the hot sun and whacked them with a stick as he did every four or five days. It kept the insects down and removed any debris either one of them brought to bed after a day of work outside.
"I'm hungry," he said as he approached, then kissed her on the top of her head. "There should still be eggs in the nest down by the river." One hand scratched his chest while the other smoothed her hair. The eggs were reptilian, and large. He had yet to see the owner but had been told it was a big creature with sharp teeth. "Wait here, and I'll go get some. Maybe after breakfast we can go down to the river and wash up." Taking Chloe anywhere was a monumental task, especially with the rough terrain they had to cross, and it took a lot of time to get anywhere. Not that they had anything else to do...
"I'll be right back." He leaned down and kissed her lips but avoided looking at her hazy eyes. As he scrambled down the side of the hill, he remembered the shock when they discovered she was blind. They still didn't talk about it, but avoided the subject altogether. Her headaches were lessening more and more with each passing day and she was getting stronger. The babies movements had increased as well, so there really was no point in discussing that which they couldn't change. He just wished he had paid more attention in the medical classes at the Academy.
Down by the river, he walked along the shore until he came upon the spot that had drawn him to the nest in the first place. There was a long depression leading into some brush in the rock-filled sand and he had followed it, curious as to the cause. That was when he found the cache of eggs. As he always did, he approached with caution, but the mother was nowhere to be seen. He plucked six of the eggs from the nest. They had been placed so that they would be warmed by the intense sun during the day and he surmised that the mother would return to keep them that way during the night. Cradling the eggs against his body, he hurried back to the cave.

Later that same day, Tyne and Chloe had made their way slowly to the river and now stood with water up to their waists in a deep, calm pool that was shaded by a cliff that rose and curved above them. This was one of Chloe's favorite places. He smiled down at her as they both bathed and occasionally he would reach a hand out to steady her when she got off balance. "This feels good," he said as he stretched his sore muscles. Yesterday, he had helped one of the aliens rebuild their shelter after the high winds had destroyed it. The thermals created by the intense heat whipped up severe windstorms in the late afternoon and Tyne was happy that they had chosen to live in a cave. Up there, they were protected.
"Damn it," Tyne shouted suddenly, jumping around in the water. "Those stupid fish are back." Tiny little fish, no longer than two inches, loved to surround them and nibble on the dead skin of their body. Tyne cupped both hands over his lower pelvis as he tried to shoo the fish away with one of his feet.
