"It has been my understanding that even Humans have a long history of risking their lives in pursuit of causes such as religion, sport, and for various other reasons and purposes that held less meaning to other species when it came to the pursuit of pleasure."
"I suppose," she replied. "Having spent a lot of time around pilots, I can understand that."
"My people see little need in suppressing, or being prudent in, that which most species already take part in. We consider ourselves open and truthful with regards to such matters."
"At least one of us is," she laughed, though it was a dark sort of sound. Honestly, she was more than a little flummoxed by Rha'de. One one hand, he claimed his species considered sex to be so fundamentally integral to their society, yet he seemed totally nonplussed about the announcement Jo had made that she didn't even like the act. For a brief moment, she regretted having told him her secret, then that thought confused her. What did she expect to happen? Had she told him just to get a laugh from what she thought would be an extreme reaction to it?
The waiter finally saw her and soon she had a glass of ice water in her hands. As she drank, she realized it wasn't that simple. She had hoped to find a comrade in celibacy. Someone who could understand. However, she quickly realized that he was not to be that person. They weren't the same, not really. While his reason was noble, life-saving even, hers was just a problem with the wiring of her brain, and she suddenly felt very, very alone, even in the crowded tavern. Sighing quietly, she looked up at Rha'de. "It was nice to meet you," she said. "I'll let you get back to work." She got up and walked rapidly toward the door, but the tears were already running down her cheeks before the doors parted and she slipped into the corridor.
