//"Affirmative, Commander. It appears that our mystery sensor readings have returned. We're sending you the original readings and what we're picking up here. What's the status on the engines?"//
"On it. Standby," came the simply reply, just enough to get the Captain off his back. Figure out that alarm Cobus. Turn off the engines, Cobus. Bring peace to the quadrant, Cobus. Or at least, that was the melodramatic equivalent he'd created in his head.
There was the sound of scuffling and panic behind him. Cobus turned, and what he saw left his mouth agape. Instead of reaching for his phaser, he blinked and turned back toward the console. If they started venting plasma internally or the engines overloaded, then whomever was or was not mauled by a snouty, formerly unconscious humanoid thing wasn't going to be all that important. He worked faster, knowing that he might only have seconds if they called for an emergency beam out. If the engines went critical next to that anomaly there was no telling what repercussions it might have for the Talon. He tried to block out the sound of phaser fire, and focused.
Plasma poured out into space as he threw the blowoff valves open. The internal pressure began to plummet, and things started turning green again. Actually, they were turning pink, but he was fairly confident that pink was the new green. With the pressure out of the system, he was now free to start dialing back on the engines. He was afraid to drop them offline all at once, not knowing how the anomaly might affect the process, so he took them down nice and easy. Fortunately, completing the task took all but a very small part of his focus, the part that still wanted desperately to turn around and see what the hell was going on. But he didn't turn around. There was a very real risk that if he made a mistake, he might not be able to fix it, at least not in time anyways. He really wished one of those aliens would wake up and do something a bit more useful than play "jump on the XO".
