The next couple of minutes were a combination of uncertainty and curiosity. She was uncertain whether or not this plan of hers was going to work, or even if it would capture someone’s attention. It was possible that she had underestimated them, and they saw through her ploy. But she didn’t think so, which left her curious as to why it was taking them as long as it did. Had she been on duty, she’d been making her way to the cell the moment her prisoner was meddling in ways she had been. It was sloppy. Very sloppy.
And she liked that. She intended to take full advantage of that.
Finally, one of the guards came around with an expression of ignorance beyond what she had hoped for. She tried to curb her enthusiasm, but it really seemed to be going her way.
"What is that sound," he demanded. Her eyes followed him as he made every move. Her hand remained at chest level, still with her chirping combadge at the center of attention. Her eyes met with his, and she channeled all the anger still within her heart into a blade with which to speak. She didn’t need to be loud and blunt. She needed to be sharp and direct. She liked how it came out in the end.
“You’re captain was right about one thing,” she started, intentionally avoiding an answer to his question. “I failed to protect my captain.” It was one part tactical and another part pleasurable. She wanted time to tick awhile longer with him ignorant and unknowing. It pushed forward that she was now in control, and she was going to use that control.
She also began to respect Monroe’s appreciation of suspense. It was fun.
“That failure is absolute,” she continued. Her eyes fell away from his and towards oblivion, and, as she continued, she allowed the buried scars to surface, and show through just enough to place sincerity and instability in her thoughts and actions. “There is no greater…” she paused to regain control of her emotions. “…dishonor than to fail to protect. Not for me. Not for my people.”
A few heartbeats later, her eyes turned to his with deadly resolve. “Put simply, this is a bomb. When it blows, we all die together. Before you do anything stupid,” Alyssa paused turning her eyes to the combadge. Her hand remained obviously still. “It’s a delicate piece of technology; motion sensitive. If I drop it…” She allowed him to fill in the blanks.
“Make your peace,” she advised. She choose not to reveal her full intentions. Right now, she wanted this guard, and anyone else who listened to feel the fear for their lives. She needed to sell them the threat before issuing them her ultimatum.
Let them ask. Let them beg. Let them fear.
