"Working. Isn't that what you wanted?"
The only thing Grace was certain of in that moment was that William Hunter was an enigma. And what was more was that he seemed to get off on being just that: incomprehensible. Grace proceeded to work, her eyes drifting in his direction occasionally. Partly to watch that he didn't sabotage anything and send her back to square one. Though, the occasional nod from him seemed to suggest that she was possibly doing something correctly.
That was what Grace didn't understand. All of this foolishness could have been avoided. They likely could have already determined if this would work and have administered it to the Captain. A long breath slipped from her lips as she focused on the task at hand. This needed to be done... now!
"Now the magic happens."
Grace continued to watch the images before her. It didn't take the nanites long before they came active. On some level, she was still disturbed by the idea of using nanites. One reason, was that it was out of her depths, or at least it felt like it. And it certainly didn't help that when they covered the basics of nanites back at the Academy that they felt it necessary to reference the Borg.
As the movement began, she watched as the nanites proceeded to move towards the proteins that had been targeted. And luckily, that was all they targeted. As the system became free of them, it appeared as if the nanites simply became dormant. She glanced over at him, to see if she could read him, but eventually went to ask him why. It was only the one word, but she felt the context was obvious.
The response wasn't anything she could have ever expected. As he leaned forward, to say that she was uncomfortable was an understatement. Her thoughts immediately went back to Dakbar as she tried to recall exactly what she should do. All of a sudden, spending a bit more free time brushing up on her self-defense seemed like a good idea. However, what happened next wasn't a malicious attack. It didn't even come off as a lecherous pass. It was just... genuine.
She couldn't think of how to explain it, but she was easily puzzled. She could feel his lips press against the top of her head, and as quickly as they were there, they were gone. He stood, and all Grace could do was stare at him... befuddled. "Because," he said. "You needed to be a part of this."
Grace's brow furrowed. What did he mean by that? All he had done was confuse her even more. "Wait... what are you talking about?" Grace asked, but she didn't really expect an answer.
"Come on...let's get that to the Captain."
And with that, Grace didn't think she was going to get an answer. Not then, and if she did, she doubted it'd be the answer that she was looking for. At the mention of the Captain, she decided to settle for solving the mystery that was William Hunter for another day. She went to secure another sample of the nanites, this one more plentiful. And thins time, she populated them into a hypospray cannister. Loading it into a hypospray she turned back to Hunter and followed him back into the proper portion of Sickbay.
It was a little surprising how long the walk to the Captain's biobed became. As she stopped there, her eyes moved to Hunter and then to Doctor Ericson. Part of her wasn't certain if she wanted to do this. What if she had done something wrong? It actually wasn't the concoction itself. She was starting to second guess her own abilities... even something as mundane as administering a hypospray. Her hand slowly rose as she took a deep breath.
The next moments were a bit of a blur, and Grace hadn't been able to discern her own actions from those around her. She saw the blue stasis field over Kealan flicker, but couldn't be certain who gave the order. She could recall the hiss of the hypospray, but had no idea if she had administered it herself. Her body watched his, for the slightest sign of movement... for reaction... for rejection. She hoped that it wasn't the latter... prayed that it wasn't.
It seemed so quiet in Sickbay and those seconds seemed eternal. It was torture in itself, and she finally brought herself to challenge the silent, yet deafening anticipation. "Captain?" she said calling his name. She waited for a response, and she had no idea if she had waited long enough. Her hand slowly reached out to rest two of her fingers upon his wrist as she checked for a pulse.
