It was only the most distant thought that caused Grace to wonder just how hard and unwelcoming that floor would be if Robin were to throw her upon it. Feeling the slight shift in his movements, she fought the urge to cling tighter, in case that would force him to throw her harder. Yet, after a few seconds, she realized that Robin wasn't attempting to throw her, but return the embrace. As she swallowed, relief set in and the tears in her eyes flowed a bit easier. The comfort from the shared embrace seemed mutual.
"Thank you."
A somber smile came to Grace's lips. In such a dark moment, she caught a very small glimpse of the man that she knew as Robin Star. In the midst of so much grief, she saw hope. Hope that despite eveything he'd lost, he'd find his way out of the darkness. She felt the embrace relax as he pulled away slightly, and then felt his fingers brush the tears from her cheeks. Swallowing, she took a moment to compose herself.
"Thank you for being here, for her... and for calling me."
"Of course," said Grace as she nodded slightly. "It meant a lot to her, and... I thought it was something you needed as well."
Grace wasn't privy to all of Robin and Kinin's history. Yet, she knew that they were close. And that sort of bond didn't just vanish. They had owed it to one other to salvage what they could from it, no matter how brief of a time.
"Nurse Cunningham, please report to the Intensive Care Unit," came a voice overhead. Grace had been so wrapped up in dealing with Robin and with what had happened to Kinin, she had nearly forgotten where she was.
"Cunningham, here. Acknowledged," said Grace after touching her comm badge. "I suppose I'd better go," said Grace reluctantly. She started to stand, but not before giving Robin's hand a final supportive squeeze before releasing it. "Are you going to be okay?" It was a question she regretted asking as soon as it left his lips. Taking a deep breath, she slowly nodded. "Don't hesitate to call if you need anything. Anything at all, okay?"
Grace made a mental note to check up on him as soon as she could. She didn't want to pester him, but this wasn't something that he'd have to deal with on his own, and she wanted him to know that. Backing away for a few steps before turning to move forward, Grace gave a brief wave to Robin before turning the corner and moving towards her summons.
As she moved towards the lift, her mind recalled the location to which she'd been called: Intensive Care. It was where her mother was, but also her father. Perhaps there was news! As soon as the doors parted, one of the nurses seemed to be waiting for Grace and immediately grabbed the girl's arm as she stepped off. "Where have you been?! Your mother has been trying to reach you!"
The excitement in her voice was too difficult to decode. Grace's brow furrowed as only questions bubbled to her mind. "Why? What's wrong?" Grace asked, yet she received no answers. It wasn't until she was deposited just outside her father's door that she realized where she was. The world around her seemed to slow, and Grace's feet felt like lead as she felt unable to move. She watched as the door was pushed open by the other nurse. Whatever words were coming out of the woman's mouth was lost in all the surrounding ambiance of the ward.
Grace wasn't sure how she made her way into the room, but her eyes were on her mother as she held her father's hand in he own. Soon, at his bedside, her eyes followed the length of his arms, to his torso and then to his face where all the answers hit her at once. Grace fell to her knees, as they were unable to support her weight any longer. The sobs rushed from her lips like water through a busted dam. Her arms blindly flailed over his form as she lay her head against his abdomen. She felt her mother's hand try to pull her closer to soothe the sobs leaving her lips. The motion was matched by the sensation of a hand brushing through her hair, just as it had so many times over so many years.
"There she is," said the deep familiar voice. It was a bit gruff and croaky, but still unmistakable to her ears. "There's my Lonnie." And there was only one person that every called her Lonnie.
