The obsession of keeping track of time was one of humanity's quirks but sometimes the amount of seconds or minutes really didn't matter at all.
Eden had been living each second as it passed obediently following the orders Commander Roman had given her and then, at some point, Cobus's voice cut through the cacophony that was Engineering with all the beeping consoles, a humming warp core, whispered conversations amongst worker bees, and that strange noise the mysterious machine had started to make.
He'd said "get out" but that wasn't what the blonde heard; the security officer's mind translated his simple direction into get the others out first. That was her job and her very nature.
Instinctively she reached for the closest engineer and shoved him toward the main doors and ran to grab another who'd been frozen stiffly in place by fear- a scene strangely familiar yet there wasn't any time to reminisce or ponder over the striking, poetic similarities between the past and present. Eden told him everything was going to be alright but she wasn't sure how, or when, or in what way.
Just like falling asleep, no one ever really recalled the moment they were knocked unconscious and like sleep it felt an awful lot alike although waking up tended to be vastly different.
What woke Eden up were curious, unidentifiable sounds at first. She didn't want to open her eyes yet since she was so comfortable wherever it was that she was lying but once the rooster crowed there was no going back to sleep no matter how cozy you felt. Like every morning she came around on her side but wasn't until she tried to lift her head that a sense of wrongness overwhelmed her. Her body felt like it'd been plowed over by a rogue shuttle and without realizing it she'd grunted through the pain in attempts to pull herself upright with her arms, coughing and wiping tears away from her eyes. Why were they watering so bad?
A quick glance around the red smoke filled room answered that question.
It was horrifying yet there was some familiar comfort in the panic that squeezed her chest with icy cold fingers.
Still delirious she called out for her closest friend and rock in chaotic times like this. "J-James!?" Was he one of the bodies on the floor? Coughing some more she called out for him again before realizing that this was no memory and that he was safely set aside far, far away. A moan left her lips but she was relieved for a brief moment.
Breathing began to quicken as her brain shed the sludge that had been slowing it down. "Commander Roman! Wher-aaaaah" she began to call out as she tried to stand but suddenly and painfully realized that she'd been pinned down to the deck by a thin piece of piping through the outside of her left leg that hadn't begun to hurt until now. Where it came from didn't matter as anxiety flooded her veins, her head suddenly feeling dizzy, lips and fingers numb with shock. She couldn't help but put her hands over the pierced flesh, wetting her fingers with slick red blood. It was hard to tell if she had taken a long breath in or a long breath out. "No, no, no, no, no..." the woman cried wiping away more tears, ruining her flawless complexion with a smear of her own life source.
It was rarely suggested that one should remove such an item from the body but being stuck to the deck seemed like an even worse idea and with little thought Eden wrapped her fingers around what she could and tugged at the cylindrical piece of metal to no avail; her hands were too wet. "Oh come on," her voice whimpered with anxious encouragement. She wiped her red hands dry over her chest and tried again, letting out a holler and a yelp but the clanging metallic sound sounded mildly victorious as the piece fell out of her grip and she was able to move freely again. Adrenaline was good for that.
Eden began to crawl toward the device, turning over the bodies on her way to where she'd last recalled seeing Victor, Tegan, and Zi. Some were waking up and one would never see anything ever again. "Roman," she'd ask but no one matched his form. "Tegan?" Were they- those thoughts were pushed aside as she pushed loose blonde hair away from her face.
"Shields are barely holding. Generators five through seven are down. Divert matter containment through sector 10 and reverse tank polarization,"
Hearing Cobus's voice was another strange comfort. They were going to be okay one way or another.
