"I see no indication that you missed the instruction pertaining to chain of command when you were at the Academy. Your Assistant Chief was down, I get that. Your Chief was stretched thin, that's iffy. What about the Talon's Mission Specialist, Executive Officer or the Captain? Were they also so busy that they couldn't be bothered?"
It apparently wasn't enough that Tek was taking personal responsibility. It seemed the Admiral wanted to break down everything that he claimed as an officer... so be it. He was mostly prepared for it.
"Lieutenant Button was.. compromised... over Lieutenant Hunter's condition at the time, and barely left his side. Captain Monroe was dealing with personal loss over Doctor Ericson, which meant that Commander Richards was overseeing the repair and refit. I admit I didn't attempt to contact either Button or Richards, but again, if Vargas was showing signs of stress over one and a half departments, Richards probably wouldn't have been much better. Likewise, no one on the ship had any reason to believe there was any danger. The only reason why my mind was focused on it was purely because there were unanswered questions about the destruction of Trallis." he said, his hands shifting uncomfortably. He was doing his absolute best to keep Tahp out of this.
"You felt that you were fully in control of the situation, even though you had been put on limited duty, and by your own admission were under scrutiny for the state of your mind and your judgment? Is that how you 'best serve the ship' and 'your crew'?"
"With all due respect, I was given temporary reprieve by Commander Vargas to use my own expertise in planetary sciences. By her own words, I was free to walk away, but working on a project that called for my skills would have been... beneficial... to my recovery. After the attack on the Talon, however, it wasn't right to back away when the majority of the science department was in shambles. I've filed hundreds of similar reports on astrometric changes that I have forwarded to Starfleet and the closest allied system. Filling out this report was just standard work, completely within the realm of light duty." he said, really wishing he just didn't do anything. Hindsight was already perfect vision.
"So, your main purpose for contacting Etimon was to find out information about the Ga'rik Alahr. When you got that information, how did you disperse it?"
It was a small relief that he didn't ask, just assumed. Which meant for now, he wouldn't have to talk about Tahp. Hopefully, they would be able to get through this without bringing her into it, only because it wasn't a secret that Tahp's presence was due to this Admiral.
"Due to their own insistence, the first thing I did with the information was verify it myself, by running a complete level 5 detailed scan of the entire ship, looking for the cellular structure that Hunter already had on file. When I determined there was a presence, I ran a second scan to see if there was any change. The sensors showed a 15% increase in the few minutes between the first and second scan. That indicated to me that Etimon was right in their concern. With the only higher member of the department being the Chief Science Officer, I checked to see where she was, but she hadn't been on board at the time. Considering the growth rate, I took it on myself to put the ship into a blue alert and immediately went to notify the Captain. Commander Vargas was transporting as the Blue Alert started, and met me at the Captain's location."
