"STOP IT!"
The shout hardly registered, though he knew he didn't appreciate an audience at the moment.
"NO!"
The touch stopped his forward momentum, merely out of Kealan's shock at the action than any kind of force that Grace could put on his arm. Turning and drawing her arm along in the process, he blinked in surprise. Of all the people on Risa, why did it have to be her.
"Grace," he muttered.
This was wrong on so many levels. He had hit one of his crew and she had seen it happen. It was over; there was no hope in recovery. Kealan removed her hand from his arm and walked away until he was near the cavern wall, upon which he placed his back as he scrubbed his face with his palms. How did one even address someone they had just punched. Commander? Cobus? Rok? None seemed appropriate now.
"I can't-" He aborted the statement, looking in Cobus' direction before trying again. "I don't expect you to forgive me," he said. What he wouldn't give for a mind scrubber right about now. And a dermal regenerator. Cobus' skin was beginning to swell and redden and Kealan knew from experience how much that had to have hurt. He had been in many a brawl in his life, usually after a rowdy night with friends, but this was different. This could end his career, and all because of a woman, a woman who probably would never have anything to do with him ever again as a result, and therein dwelled the comedy to the tragedy.
He looked sideways at her, saw the fear and disappointment in her eyes, and it was too much for him. "Do what you must," he said.
