"Gideon!"
Grace watched as Eden reunited with the young boy. She squeezed him him tightly, and littered him with kisses. She loved him... obviously. It was her brother, right? Grace attempted to recall what she could from Eden's file, the name certainly seemed familiar. And was it really him? Had the woman holding them captive in Hunter's quarters really brought the boy here?
"Why am I here? Are Micah and Elijah here too?"
It wasn't fair. It was... cruel to do this to someone. To ask someone to take one life to spare another was one thing. However, to bring someone's loved one there to motivate it... to witness it? Grace couldn't help but wonder just how much thought Eden was now giving this offer that had been made.
"I'm so sorry, Gideon."
As she watched Eden kneel in front of Gideon, Grace couldn't help but wonder what was next. She hadn't named how she wanted to die, but would Eden even give her that choice. She didn't want to believe that Eden was capable of such a thing, but emotions like grief and love had driven even the noblest of people to lengths far beyond their moral fiber.
"Two examples have been made. It is in your loved one's best interest to cooperate."
The gauntlet had been thrown down, and it was quite evident now what was at stake. Grace's eyes looked at the boy. He was so young... so innocent. How could her life ever be more valuable than his? She knew the risks that came with the uniform that she wore. And she knew there was always the chance that she'd be asked to sacrifice her own life for someone else's.
"What's happening?"
"Grace, can you please tell Jenison. I can't..."
She was wrestling with it all. Eden had always been such a bright spirit that to see her in this sort of pain, Grace couldn't help but feel guilty. She wasn't sure why? According to their 'hostess' Grace likely had the ability to end Eden's suffering, but to make her a murderer? There was no telling how emotionally damning that could be to her or anyone else that fulfilled that woman's wishes.
Grace took a step forward and gently placed her hands on Eden's shoulder. "It's okay, Eden. He's going to be all right," Grace said warmly. It was a craft of its own, that she honed over the years. The ability to offer a glimmer of hope despite the obvious gloom of a situation. Grace looked over at Gideon and smiled. "Hi, Gideon. I'm Eden's friend, Grace."
Her eyes glanced towards the replicator, and then back at the boy. "Hey, you know how to work the replicator over there, right?" Grace asked. "Why don't you replicate yourself a snack and maybe a little something sweet to put a smile on Eden's face."
Grace then exhaled and tapped her comm badge to do as Eden asked. "Cunningham to Bridge," she said allowed after her badge's chirp. "Lt. Commander Jenison, Lieutenant Nivans and I have been joined by a guest: her little brother, Gideon." Grace exhaled before going on. "I... believe this is one of the examples 'she' was referring to."
