"She's... she's supposed to be in charge here,"
Auri running an infirmary on a Federation starship would have been something to see, not because she wasn't capable, but because it wasn't exactly something she aspired to do in her career at the moment. There were lots of reasons and most of them couldn't be argued against.
"You know, Sera, I'm sure your mom is looking for you right now. And when you're lost, the best thing you can do is stay in one spot so that it's easier to find you. How about we get you a snack. You want to wait in... in there?"
Bernard followed Grace's finger and he turned to give the nurse a look. A kid in an office? With breakable things? With moveable items?
He looked at Sera.
Somehow it didn't seem as frightful if she were the one to occupy that space.
"Nurse Cunningham is right, of course. You should listen to her." Bernard stood up to his full height and looked around to see very little had changed in the room.
Then Sera cut him down. "You're in all her favorite pictures."
He wanted to tell the girl that his mother was also in all of his but his jaw clenched tight giving his smile a strained look.
"Excuse me, sir? Doctor Ericson encouraged me to speak my mind more often."
An instruction the man didn't want to change, so he allowed her to continue speaking without interruption, allowing his silence to be permission.
"It may not be my place to say this, but... I think you should keep some distance from Sera."
That must have been difficult to say.
"Assuming we get our realities reset, she's going to return to a reality that you're not apart of, sir. I just... I think it could be confusing for her if she had to lose her father again."
"It would be entirely unfair to Sera," Bernard agreed coolly. There was no way he could know the girl but all the same he felt a responsibility toward her that was far different than the obligation he had to any patient within these bulkheads.
In a rare physical expression of trust, Bernard awkwardly gave Grace a pat on the arm. He felt like had to but it wasn't something he was well practiced in when it came to those he worked with. "Please stay with her. I am aware this sort of instruction is not a part of your mission here however if anything were to happen I would dread to think-" it was difficult to say.
The computer Bernard had been at beeped with good timing.
"Do standby," the doctor finished as he went back to work, going through the results of T'Rai's scans.
"Commander," Bernard said drawing up the most interesting results for Jeven to see, "I think a science team may be in order."
