"When it's absolutely necessary, it'll be too late."
"Yes, but let's allow Kinin to make decisions for herself," M'Khol said firmly. He knew that Kinin wouldn't want to be ordered around at random because he knew exactly how he would feel in her position. It was bad enough to be held against your will, but to have to do everything someone told you? It was unthinkable.
"They're pretty fast, very agile... no way you're out-swimming them even if you're at your best."
"No, we will have to try and avoid them in the water," M'Khol said. It wasn't a thought that he was fond of, but there was nothing about this whole endeavor that he liked. In water, their chances of survival if one of them was knocked unconscious were far lower. Not to mention if the Salorri were to grab them and try and pull them under water.
"Would that work? We might accidently lip read..."
"We... what?" M'Khol said, somewhat perplexed by the other man's suggestion. "I do not believe that the Salorri suggestion, or whatever it is, allows us to comprehend things that we ordinarily cannot. If that were the case, they would not need to speak to us in a language we understand."
"What?"
M'Khol's palm collided with his face as the other man struggled to understand just what precisely was going on. "The Salorri must have instructed her to do what men told her to do at some point. That is why she does everything you or I say to do." He spoke slowly, as if addressing a slow child, which judging by Robin's actions at times, wasn't particularly far from the truth.
"How does that work? I said over board, not on board."
"How does one get over bo... you know what, nevermind. Robin and I should worry about the problem at hand, not about semantics," M'Khol said, choosing his verbiage carefully to avoid accidentally throwing Kinin into a panic. Checking to make sure no Salorri were around, M'Khol slowly crept to the water's edge. Plunging his face under the water, he tried to see if there was anyone under there, but failed. The water wasn't nearly clear enough for that, and the salt burned somewhat.
Returning to Star's side, he lifted up the other man easily, before carrying him back to the water, and setting him down gently.
