"We're cadets. I don't think we do anything right until we graduate,"
"Good. Well-- I mean that should make things easier, right? Less pressure. I try to set the bar really low to avoid disappointment," he explained. Everyday that he didn't fail out of the Academy was considered a victory in his book. Starfleet actually seemed to suit the cadet quite well; if his test scores and performance evaluations were any indication, he was far from failing.
She still hadn't told him his nickname. He hoped it wasn't something bad, like "that loser kid with the weird face". As anxious as he was to find out what she'd decided to call him, Keith was so pleased she'd chosen to call him anything that he didn't want to push the subject. Instead, he was trying really hard to pretend to be one of those cool people who didn't care.
"So is the one that was talking to you earlier a bully,"
"Who, him," Keith asked, following Contessa's gaze to confirm. "I don't think so," he said in a somewhat uncertain tone. "He says weird things, and I can't tell if he's joking. But I'm a weird science kid, so I don't judge," he said with a shrug. "Bullies usually pick me out right away, so you're probably safe."
Keith stood up a little straighter as the door opened, turning towards it expectantly, but relaxed on realizing the Commandant wasn't among them, just a few more cadets, one of whom was so ridiculously attractive that no girl would ever look as him as anything except that cute, non-threatening guy to be friends with in a strictly nonsexual way. For the most part, that had been the story of his life.
